Similarities and Contrast between Jay Gatsby and Amory Blaine Introduction The Great Gatsby is movie written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The film incorporates several characters dwelling in an imaginary city, West Egg, during the 1922’s summer. The story mostly revolves around the main character, Jay Gatsby, who was young but wealthy. He had, however, made his wealthy mysteriously and hence a lot of controversy arose. Similarly, F. Scott Fitzgerald authored debut novel, “This Side of Paradise” that was published in 1920.
The novel is about a close examination of lives and morality of young people who participated in the World War I. The novel revolved around the main character, Amory Blaine, who is a very handsome and attractive university student. It is quite fascinating how F. Scott Fitzgerald used the two main characters with major similarities and clear and distinct differences. Jay Gatsby and Amory Blaine are just but the same character, showing similar uniqueness in the novel and the film but have been distinguished to bring out a theme transition from the film through to the novel.
This essay compares and contrasts the two characters. Similarities The Great Gatsby movie depicts Jay Gatsby as a person merely driven by passion for excelling. He is, however, very passionate about Daisy Buchanan, a very beautiful woman who made him go out of his way to please her. This character is also reflected by Blaine Amory. He had affairs with a lot of women but lastly captivated and fell in love with this charming, beautiful woman, Rosalind. Just like Jay Gatsby, Blaine Amory had a strong motive and love for women.
Through both Gatsby and Blaine’s love life, they have demonstrated similarity that they were dumped as in both parties the two women fell in love with other rich men. Amory Blaine and Jay Gatsby were educated and perceived life with such a strong heart to excel. Both characters were behind their struggle, made money and become rich. In this case, the two were hard working and as a result, they acquired anything they ever desired.(Maurer, Kate 15) Contrast Fitzgerald propels the movie further to reveal Jay Gatsby’s background that suddenly changed after acquiring wealth in a controversial manner.
He was brought up in the rural areas but became wealth illegally. On the other hand, the novel presents Blaine Amory as a person who accumulated wealth by working in the army. It can be concluded that he earned his wealth with honesty, (Stephen, 212) Blaine Amory loved to spend every penny on partying with friends while in contrast Gatsby is strict and adamant when it comes to spending and operating his business. He always pursued and glorified wealth in order to please the woman he loved. Gatsby is contrasted most consistently with Amory.
Gatsby being the innocent, hopeful young man who stakes everything on his dreams, whereas Amory is a bully, and his lifestyle and attitude differ from that of Gatsby, (Ginet 213). In contrast Gatsby was more alarming and cultured when dealing with money whereas Amory was egocentric and uncultured. In conclusion, F. Scott Fitzgerald can be thought to have modified the character in Jay Gatsby in the film with Blaine Amory in the novel. The two are just but the same person, with several differences to allow the author change the themes and the setting.
