The Great Gatsby The novel en d The “Great Gatsby” is a clear representation of the American society. The main theme of this novel is the fact that American dream is long gone, and most probably is dead. This is in relation to the way in which the author developed the plot, characters as well as the message conveyed by the novel. The author superbly uses the main character known as Nick Caraway to clearly bring out the main theme of the novel. Nick Carraway is depicted as the moralistic man who cares a lot about himself as well as others.
He always keeps on remembering the old se advice given to him by his father relevant to treating other people. This is critical in ensuring that the person lives in harmony with all circumstances as well as situations alongside pursuing his dreams. However, it is important to note that the love of money and wealth has increasingly led to moral erosion in the American State. This has translated to the killing of hope and the long term dreams. The main culprit in effecting these is money. The combination of money with hopes as well as success in the quest for attaining one’s dreams has proved to take America towards the direction of materialism.
In this regard, the characters aspire to attain their dreams through corrupt methods. This is clearly depicted in the romantic emotions that informed the Gatsby’s desire to win Daisy as his lover. He decided to use all means, even corrupting his ways through in order to fulfill his ambitions (Fitzgerald, 22). He depicts the real character of Americans of never giving up. He fought for Daisy even after Daisy had made up her mid to leave him. He was relentless, hopeful and optimistic. (Fitzgerald, 182)The novel also features high degree of infatuation resulting from some of the characters.
One such character is Jay who feels strong romantic connections with Daisy. Jay is depicted as a victim of love whose feelings later on make him suffer so much. He tries to attain his dreams through attempting to corrupt Daisy’s heart with money. This clearly depicts the picture of hopelessness and lost dreams. Daisy submits to the love of money and accepts the proposal from Jay. However, she does this only to exploit money but rather she has no love for him. This is a clear form of infatuation that is fuelled by the love of money, hypocrisy as well as materialism.
In conclusion, it is prudent to acknowledge the fact that the novel mainly focuses on the American society with the issue of social classes, corruption and quest to fulfill one’s dreams forming the epitome in the story. However, the story is also punctuated with the controversial theme of love and infatuation that many characters fall victim including Jay. The story depicts the lost hope of America in several broad aspects involving the issue of corruption as well as discriminations emanating from the issue of social classes.
