In this book, the cheese has been used metaphorically to mean what one wants in life, a loving relationship, possession or money, a good job, peace of mind or health. The maze can be interpreted as where one look for what he or she wants. Scurry and Sniff, are the mice. Sniff is good at sniffing out things (cheese) and Scurry excels at “scurrying” after the cheese. Since the mice are known to be less complex and smaller beings, they rarely think about things. When they find the cheese; they eat it, and if they don’t find it, they will still continue to look for it.
Unlike the human beings, the mice don’t analyze the situations.Haw and Hem are used to represent symbolically the human beings. They are more complicated than the mice. The Hem is the character that is afraid of the change. The one that is unable to take a break from the daily routine, just like most other human beings. On discovering that the cheese is nowhere to be found, Hem and Hew mop around. They even end up blaming one another for moving their cheese. Even though the cheese is their only source of survival, they are not willing to look for it anymore.
After moping around for some time, Haw decides to go and look for the cheese elsewhere, Hem, on the other hand, stays around stubbornly thinking that someone will eventually come and put back the cheese. While on his way, the Haw keeps etching on the walls for the Hem to know the way to leading to the Cheese in the event that he decides to follow him.
