April 28, Reading Response Assignment The Pearl-Sewn Shirt refers to the story if a merchant who goes on a long business trip for one year and is still significantly delayed and leaves his wife with whom he is madly in love with. The wife is consequently seduced by another man who at lost wins her love but later decides too on going on a business trip. She reluctantly sees him go but gives him a special shirt of the husband. We will seek to discuss the circulation of the possession and its significance within the context of the tale.

After being given the special shirt, the lover departs for his trip and boasts to a new acquaintance about seducing the wife with the shirt serving as an evidence which despite finding it so difficult, the husband restrains himself but divorced the wife after getting home. On the part of the lover, the wife discovers the shirt and hides it. Later the husband dies on an unlucky trip and the resulting financial difficulties forces the wife to get married again to a man who is amazed at the working of providence when he sees his pearl-sewn shirt which makes him realize that he is married to the man who had seduced his first wife.

Towards the end, the divorced wife and the husband are reunited with the story ending when both women are married to the merchant who apart from learning his lessons about not staying too long away from home, it is also evident that the pearl-sewn shirt is the unifying factor here.
