THE SCRIBNER ANTHOLOGY OF CONTEMPORARY SHORT FICTION The story of Dybek outlines the story of a teenage boy who is about toexperience his first encounter with sex. The tension in the story is elevated by the step by step approach memories leading to the first encounter. He says that, “On my fingers your slick scent mixed…your bikini top fell away…my hands caught your breast…” (Dybek 182). This story is very applicable in the sense that it applies to the many young people who are in a quest explore their sexual life.

The author has succeeded in developing an argumentative approach that enables the reader to understand his main idea and to offer a detailed account of real life experiences. In the Gaitskill’s “Tiny, Smiling Daddy”,there is a shift in the focus as well as the pulse of the conflict that has been developed. The story begins by the main protagonist being told that the daughter has written an article about his father in the Self magazine. The author has succeeded in creating a pulse that of the story that is based on erratic thumping of the heart that is anchored on the desire to have a clue of what had been written.

The tension in this story is escalated by the fact that the main character is limited in his movement as he has to wait for his wife to return home with their single car. The delay was aimed at increasing the level of anxiety in the story as well captivating the readers to continue reading the story. The narration offers a deeper insight of an unlikable character whose homophobic and narrow mindedness has alienated that of his daughter. The essay is a portrayal of the challenges that faces the current society which the author has succeeded in expressing.
