The tedious nature of the members exploits the long events of the day. Cather uses the terminology to create a sense of human. Divest in this context means help; this is a different meaning form what we are accustomed to(is there an evidence for this meaning?) [from the quotation “…Mrs. Forrester went to help the Captain divest himself of his frock coat, and put it away for him…” it is evident the author is referring to assist his husband. The actual meaning of the word ‘divest’ is deprive]. Exaggeration in this case plays part in ensuring the humor is visible to the reader. The quote also exploits the physical nature of the Captain. The use of the term hurt implies the loneliness experienced by the Captain. The author uses exaggeration to exploit the situation in the room. Style is used by Cather to transit form a jovial party mood to a calm exhausting night. The Captain is describes as sleeping in ‘narrow Iron Bed’. The expression is meant to refer to the Captain as being lonely and lacking comfort (do you mean looking for comfort? Can you explain?) [I meant lacking comfort which in this case refers to a missing company]. It is ironic how Mrs. Forrester aids the lonely captain; there is a connection between the captains loneliness to the innocent character of Constance (can you briefly give me few connectios?) Niel was identified as the sole contender for Constance’s love. The introduction of the Captain as a weak and lonely is a prediction of what would transpire in the next chapter. The extract introduces a fourth element in the continuous growing interest initiated in the Forrester’s home. This means that the story would likely shift from Constance love triangle to the Captains effort to rediscover himself among his neighbors. The writer acknowledges the importance of the female characters while exploring personal secretes earlier own hidden by the male characters. She introduces new element within the story. Willa Cather creates the passage to indicate how the story is developed and presented by the Foresters. Chapter four, part one of the book revolved around the love that was brewing between Constance and Niel. Cather uses words to indicate satire and irony. The transformation of style from dialogue to flashback is utilized by the author to indicate how theme changes.
