August tells her about the hardship of choosing to do what is right. Lily imagines that she is dancing with the bees, but her good feelings stop when she remembers her mother. August interrupts her imagination and wants to talk to her about her past, but Lily does not want to. After their bee patrol, May cooks fried okra because she has not been to the wall for five days. Zach tells everyone about Jack Palance, a movie star, because he plans to bring a black woman to the movies at the white section with him.
Zach says that some whites already plan to stand guard outside the theater to stop Palance from doing it. After their meal, Lily goes with Zach to deliver honey to Clayton Forrest’s office. She calls T. Ray from this office. She asks him what her favorite color is, and he does not answer it. He is angry that Lily runs away with Rosaleen to save the latter. She ends the call because T. Ray does not say any good thing to her. She writes a letter to T. Ray that shows her disappointment in him.
She tears the letter to pieces. That night, Lily goes to Our Lady of Chains to pray for her mother and to be loved. They are having a very hot weather, so Lily helps August to water the bees with sugar water. Lily gets stung for the first time and August calls her a true beekeeper for experiencing it. After they have given water and sugar to the bee hives, all women have a good time at home playing with the water sprinkler, even June. June hugs Lily, which surprises her. One day, Lily asks May about her mother, Deborah, and she tells her that she once lived with them, but May gets upset and goes to the wall.
Lily feels happy that her mother has lived with August and her sisters, so she tries to feel what it must have been to be like her mother. Lily wants to ask August about her mother, but she is busy talking to another woman. Lily and Zach go to town to wait for Jack Palance. Jackson, one of Zach’s friends, throws a bottle of coke at a white man who approaches them with a shovel. Zach gets into trouble for not telling the police who threw the bottle to the white man, so he and his friends get jailed.
Lily walks home. They decide to not tell what happened with Zach to May because this will upset her. August and Lily visit Zach in jail. May learns that Zach is in jail and reacts differently by being quiet instead of crying. May goes to the wall alone. August and the rest go after May to make sure she is okay. August finds May’s body in the river. May drowns herself with a slab of stone on her.Personal Response: It must be so hard for Lily to tell the truth to August because she is afraid to lose all those who love her.
August tells her that it is hard for people to choose what is right. Lily also cannot do what is right, which is to be honest with the Boatwrights, because she might feel that she will lose them. She is a girl who needs love and acceptance that she did not get from her own father. She needs the Boatwrights to feel loved, and she might lose them if they know that she has been lying to them for a long time. Aside from her fears, I can understand why Lily still loves T. Ray despite his temper and lack of ability to love her. T. Ray is her father, the only parent she grows up with.
She needs him to love her. She expects him to love her back. Unfortunately, T. Ray is too selfish and bitter to love his daughter. Whatever happens though, he is her father and nothing can change that. If I had the same father, I would still love him. I may not be able to live with him, but in my heart, I will love and respect him as my father. Finally, I am shocked when May kills herself. She loves Zach very much and maybe she thinks that the world is so evil to lock up a sweet, smart boy like Zach that she can no longer live in it anymore.
If I were August, I would be depressed if this happens. She knows already that May is broken and that they should not have allowed her to leave alone. But then again, May is too sensitive to survive in their kind of society where racism and anger are everywhere. May is better off in heaven, where she can find peace.Questions: (type two questions related to the novel for class discussion)How can children cope with parents who do not love them or accept them? How can family members of a mentally ill person help her deal with different kinds of losses in life?
