Comparative analysis Children of the Sea” by Edwidge Danticat and “Big Mamas Funeral” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez) Course nameUniversityDateComparative analysis(“Children of the Sea” by Edwidge Danticat and “Big Mamas Funeral” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez)Contemporary literature does not stop to astonish the readers of any circle and mentality. The diversity of genres and variety of techniques impress entirely. Modern reader has a chance to choose such piece of literary art that he/she likes and appreciate.

There is a tendency in postmodern culture to deem that everything has already written and done. People cannot create anything new; still we observe a wide multiplicity of literary works that affect reader’s minds and perception on the new manner. Our attention holds on two postmodern short stories today. They are “Children of the Sea” by Edwidge Danticat and “Big Mamas Funeral” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Although these two stories are completely different, we may find a lot of things in common there.

First and foremost, these stories are written in the same literary age. That is why we may argue on identical outlook and mutual ideology of two different writers. The same understanding of the reality and perception of the world stipulates by the time frame of these two works. There are no doubts, that both Danticat and Marquez have their own individual, subjective embranchment of actuality, still similar tendencies are notable in their works. Both creations have symbolic titles with the implicit content.

“Children of the Sea” refers to people who get lost, and cannot find a true way in their life. Nurse argues after reading this story “you will never look at boat people the same way again” (2003). Danticat provides completely new, fresh vision of such people. In the Marquez “Big Mama’s Funeral” we have a symbol of Big Mama that means the political power, and its strict influence on common people. We should notice that first creation makes an emphasis on tragedy and internal suffering, while the second work bases on strict sarcasm and ironical implementations.

Authors use different techniques in the process of writing their short stories, but they reveal the content artistically and interestingly. The creations astound by their non-conventional narrative perspective. “Children of the sea” represents the story from two different narrators. The creation is written in the epistolary style from the presence of two beloved people who cannot be together because of hard circumstances. The main peculiarity of these letters is that the senders are not able to send them.

They are written just to appease inner feelings of two sufferers. Marquez in his “Big Mama’s Funeral” uses one narrator, but he includes juxtapositions that break the logical and linear order of events in the story (Pelayo, 2001). It should be mentioned that both works introduce popular at that period techniques that names stream of consciousness. Such method successfully represents inner emotions and proper thought of the main characters. Danticat plays with the “I” pronoun, and adduces it as a capitalized, to represent more personal account of the letter.

Still, author use non-capitalized “i” to refer readers to more general fate of ordinary people. Marquez’s escape route is represented through fantastic and imaginary dimension that weaves with reality in the story. In addition, the technique of enumeration implements to the number of essential functions in the story. We should notice that both authors use play in the level of time and space dimensions. Such technique makes the story interesting and curious to read. Danticat constricts time in her story, and wide the space continuum for the readers as man remains to be in the sea, while the lady finds herself in the land.

Marquez starts his story from the end; moreover he comprises fantastic images in his work.Although the stories comprise different content and represent various angles, they somehow connected thematically. We may notice that the theme of solitude, loneliness, entire lost and justice are highlighted in both stories. Moreover, historical background together with political evidence accompanies the stories. All in all, it stays clear that “Children of the Sea” by Edwidge Danticat and “Big Mamas Funeral” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez are fascinating examples of postmodern culture in the current area of literary creations.

Authors use common innovative techniques in the process of creating the stories; still they represent it in their own unique and incredible manner. Reference List:Nurse, D. B. (2003).
