The novel indicates various dimensions towards the unification of the various groups of people. Among them is the attitude of some of the members to be absorbed into a single nation. The French Canadians and the English Canadians had differences in their behaviors and beliefs, myths, and animosities. It was due to their differences that the groups existed as different people that did not communicate and were also isolated. Language difference was also an aspect that contributed to the misunderstandings among the communities (MacLennan and Robert 56).

In the novel, Athanase Tallard, who was the Seigneur in Saint-Marc-des-Erables, introduced Captain John Yardley, who was a non-catholic as the buyer of the Dansereau farm. The Seigneur aroused hostility among the members of a closed society; father Emile Beaubien also refuted his idea of building a power station and also a factory in the name of Huntly McQueen. He termed it as being contrary to the traditions of the parish. Therefore, father Emile was termed as a traitor to race and religion and also against conscription by Marius, who was a protestant (MacLennan and Robert 67).
