17 May The Great Gatsby- Literary analysis: This essay is principally based on contemplating the concept of tragedy in “The Great Gatsby” authored by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Following discussion seeks to identify the character which is most responsible for tragic events in the play. It will also attempt to prove that the title character, Jay Gatsby, is responsible for tragedy in the novel. The tragedy starts when he is introduced to Daisy. He has another man ask someone at one point, “if you’ll invite Daisy to your house some afternoon and then let him come over” (Fitzgerald 78).

He engages in bootlegging to gather more wealth. When Gatsby shows Daisy his expensive shirts, she is quite impressed “because [she’s] never seen such – such beautiful shirts before” (Fitzgerald 98). He makes a lot of mistakes in his wild pursuit for another man’s wife. It is claimed that “Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay,” (Fitzgerald 79). This shows that everything Gatsby does in the novel is to attain Daisy. It was because of Gatsby’s relationship with Daisy, that Daisy drove his car and accidentally killed Myrtle who was George’s wife.

This got George so furious that believing it was Gatsby who killed his wife, shot Gatsby dead. Concluding, the above discussion proves that Gatsby reached a tragic end for not acting responsibly in life. He is very materialistic and is an example of lack of morality. He blindly pursues Daisy regardless of the fact that she is the wife of Tom Buchanan. This is how Gatsby becomes responsible for his own tragic end due to creating tragedy in other people’s lives.
