Pamuk’s books have different types of fiction ranging from an aspiring novelist to an authorial figure of the dissident agency.By reimagining the Ottoman legacy, Pamuk is able to realign the literary modernity of turkey. The novel “My Name Is Red” is considered blasphemous from an Islamic perspective. The plot of this novel is driven artistic representation of blasphemy. After the translated version of the novel “My Name Is Red” was released, it made Pamuk a household name among literature professors and in the United States.
It is his most complex novel.Pamuk begins the first chapter of the book my name is red with epitaphs from Quran which is the holy book of the Muslims. There are references to the pen (kalam) which Muslims believe was created by God so that he could write down future events. There is a mention of two pens in Pamuk’s novel. The first pen is more sacred and is believed to write the sacred words of the Quran. The second pen is believed not to be sacred as it challenges the authority of Allah.
Pamuk uses these pens creatively to show the difference between sacred and secular contexts. There is a third pin that symbolizes Pamuk’s own writing. In the novel “My Name Is Red” Pamuk is able to merge the two pens to make the third pen. The third pens serve to redefine modernity through a unique and innovative style. Muslims refer the Miraj to prophet’s ascension. Pamuk makes a secular revision of this by describing the ascension of one the characters in the novel that was murdered (Eniste Effendi).
The Berzah is an Islamic word that signifies the state an individual is in as they wait for judgment. Enishte Effendi narrates a part of the novel that describes a place where souls of dead people reside after death.
