The persona here is raised in family with a single father and six brothers. She does not get the opportunity to familiarize with the life values she needs by somebody of her gender. This is because the persona moves from her birthplace in Mexico to Texas with her husband. The immigration here defines the transformation of culture.

The persona, Cleofilas, as a woman, is supposed to be submissive to her husband. Coupled with that, she is a sufferer of domestic viciousness. Cleofilas dreamt of a blissful matrimony based on the soap operas dramatized on television. She trusts that agonizing in the name of love is right and she should persevere. In Texas, she bears a youngster. Naturally, procreation is among the roles of a woman in any cultural setting. She faces a life of poverty, mistreatment, and intemperance. Her husband, Juan, abuses her to level his frustrations from work, which does not give him sufficient wages.

During one of her calls to a parental clinic, the health worker notices some contusions on her, and recognizes that she endures domestic viciousness. As a health worker and fellow woman, she resolves to aid Cleofilas escape her jeopardies. This shows the kind-heartedness in the society. As part of the traditional roles of a woman, the persona cannot disclose to anyone that she is being abused. Denial lies in the order of abuse (Cisneros). Besides, they lived in an isolated home with no community to interact with, coupled by unsatisfactory infrastructure.

The Wrysons by John CheeverJohn Cheever dramatically talks about the duties of each sexual category in the society. Cheever brings out gender roles by judiciously introducing Irene and Donald. Donald Wryson works in a bank. After the loss of his mother, he grieves by baking cakes at night. In contrast, Irene, his loving wife, is afraid because she has hallucinations in which she is killed together with her daughter. Aside from that, she constantly dreams of an atomic detonation around their locality.

Perceptibly, the couple is fearful because they are undermining gender roles. Irene is always thinking of science war, which is a masculine part, whereas Donald bakes cakes, yet the kitchen traditionally belongs to women. In addition, the couple is obsessed with class and their perception to the society. For this reason, they hide their faultiness from the society (Cheever). To maintain their class, they send hundreds of cards every Christmas. When the narrator exterminates them, people do not even know they are deceased, and they persistently send Christmas postcards.

This affects their daughter who goes through distress reading cards addressed to her dead parents. The low class society is represented by the man at their gate. Irene fears he may have noticed that they defy the gender rules. They vainly paint a good fake impression of themselves in front of him.
