The narrator through the thoughts of Hulga’s mother informs that Hulga drops her name Joy willfully without any consent of her mother and finds the ugliest name found in any language of the world. Mrs. Hopewell, Hulga’s mother continues to use Joy to call her but she knows that she has to accept the change one day. The name Joy symbolizes happiness while Hulga is not a happy soul at all. She is unhappy but accepts everything that comes her way. She drops her name because she feels no joy in her life.
She rejects the beautiful name and accepts an ugly one because of the ugliness surrounding her and her fate. Hulga studies until she gets a PHD degree and stops because there is no degree left for her. Her devotion to studying is supported because of her lack of liveliness and attraction towards the world. In spite of studying too much, she is unable to judge people and the world around her. She is a simple child still at thirty-two and appears to be nonsense and this is clearly felt by her mother as she thinks, “Mrs.
Hopewell thought it was idiotic and showed simply that she was still a child. She was brilliant but she didn’t have a grain of sense.” (O’Connor 132). Manley Pointer who claims to be uneducated and a simple person easily befools her because of her insensibility. Hugla is quite aware of her disabilities and tries to accept them. She finds a way out in her education and because of her education considers herself somewhat superior to the young men. Mrs. Hopewell while informing about Hugla’s lack of interest towards nature and people notifies, “Sometimes she went for walks but she didn’t like dogs or cats or birds or flowers or nature or nice young men.
She looked at nice young men as if she could smell their stupidity.” (O’Connor 132). Because of her being highly educated, she considers people as inferior to her. When she meets Manley Pointer, she regards him as a simple man who knows
