Introduction In the past few years, we have witnessed remarkable developments in the capabilities of computerized information systems. Cyber-crime is an upcoming event that relates to crime and few organizations, predominantly from the USA, have conducted research in this field. Computer and cyber crime include:- hacking, copying of copyrighted material, theft and misuse of confidential information of someone else, coding a computer virus or a bug with an intention to disrupt someones computer or network with the intention to serve another cause. Computer Crime There is a high level of interest in computer crime and safety issues among companies and organization. Examples of such cases include: Using a computer as an instrument of the crime. An example is where a person uses an employer’s computer to embezzle funds from an organization’s bank account. In this case, one cannot commit crime when the computer is off Computer being the centre of crime. In such instances, the computer is the focus of the crime. An example is where a criminal breaks into a computer room with the intension of stealing the computer or other computer peripheral. The use of computer as a repository evidence is another form of computer crime. An example of such a situation is where a person store copy of copied music files in his personal computer. Hacking is one common name meaning having unlawful access to another computer. It becomes a crime since the culprit uses a computer as an instrument of crime. To be guilty of the crime, one must have cast some commands to bypass security. Cyber Crime Cyber crime refers to criminal conduct committed on a computer, network electronic and auxiliary devices where the computer has not necessarily been used instrumentally in crime. It involves disruption of network traffic, denial of service, launching attacks or e-mail bombing, generation of viruses, identity theft, cyber stalking and cyber squatting (Robert 15). Any unlawful act carried out on the internet is Cyber crime. Cyber crimes, which can be, committed against various groups are: 1. Against individuals: Harassment via e-mails and social websites Cyber-stalking Dissemination of indecent material; Denouncement Cracking; and Indecent exposure. 2. Individual property: Computer sabotage Transmitting virus Unauthorized control over a computer system and Hacking 3. Against an organization: Hacking and cracking Ownership of unauthorized information Cyber sabotage against the government Distribution of plagiarized software 4. Against society at large: Pornography (child pornography); Adulterating the youth through indecent exposure and Trafficking. This grouping shows that various faces of the society can be affected by cyber crime. Effects of Cyber and Computer Crime Cyber crime impacts on every country’s economy. It has the potential to affect technology which is a key requirement for productivity enhancement and ultimately for socio-economic progress. Some corporations are forced to limit entire internet network segment and traffic that originate from regions know to be affected by cyber crime. There are more sophisticated technologies that are emerging. These will make it easier to separate and isolate e-mail traffic from some regions known for poor technology etiquette. It is possible that the general infrastructure and material security assets will be required by unreceptive and corrupt illegal users. Cyber crime combating Measures Different countries have implemented different methods to compete against the crime depending on their nature and extent. One thing that is certain is that a state with a high incidence of crime cannot advance. This is because crime is the converse of the former. Measures to be put in place include; Creation of an agency to implement cyber crime laws. Some of the duties of the agency would include; engaging public explanation programs, building official consent amongst present agencies, providing technical support to the National Assemblies on Cyber-crime Crime and in the conscripting of the cyber crime Act. Violence against women in families and relationship is other upcoming criminology event. The Media report homicides and intimate violence between partners almost on a daily basis. Many people are confusing between power and control. There are disconnections of reality between partners. Though the incidences are increasing steadily, journalists are bias in reporting them. Scholars and advocates for violence against women have researched on issues concerning Intimate Partner Violence. These researchers highlighted some of these issues: information the journalists include and omit when reporting on dead victims as a result of relationships violence, description of the victims of violence, the crime circumstances, process of data collection and the type of individuals put on interviews. Journalists are biased to some extent, and there is an exaggeration of Intimate Partners Violence. The biases become clear in the assumptions shared concerning the death of the victims and the extent between which the crime is abstracted from being abusive to as an event which is discrete. The newspapers and other media means are brief and not clear. Readers and viewers are left to conclude for the unclear circumstances. People find many gaps to fill. The advocates for Violence Against Women, concluded that most relationships are that of boyfriend and girlfriend rather than intimate. The word intimate has been misleading, and media have failed to clarify that. It has become difficult for people to identify whether some relationships have been for the past. A perpetrator may consider being the victim’s intimate though might not have evidence for the relationships. Families have evidence issues concerning non fatal and fatal cases. Partners fail to define “intimate partner” and what Intimate Partners Violence means and entails. Homicide has been increasing day to day. A person can kill another, and the court fail to identify whether it is a criminal act or criminal intent. Issues surrounding human death are spectacle and unpredictable. It has relevance on cultural issues. It has come clear that all homicides cases are not reported. This has raised many questions in the public. People wonder why there is bias in reporting of these cases. Why are others emphasized than others? Race, sex and social status are some of the factors which determine the homicides cases to be reported. Death is the most crime reported. Biasness has always favored affluent female sufferers. Media framing includes; selection and salience of information is considered dangerous reporting. There is a need to stop all forms of violence against women and girls. Policy makers should emphasize on violent acts like those which strengthens justice responses, protection of women and girls against all types of violence including trafficking. Media and other organizations should help public understand violence nature of women and its prevalence. Acquaintances and partners are perpetrators of women hence should account for the violence. Needs of the victims should be given attention In conclusion, Information Technology and internet in particular has provided enhancement to economic, social academic and political activities now offer criminals the means of causing loss and harm to users. Cyber crime is a global phenomenon causing a serious image problem to some countries and has also caused economic loss to many nations. In order to cub cyber crime, enforce cyber laws. In addition to that, it is recommended that a wide media campaign be boarded upon by government on the danger of cyber fraud both to the culprits and projected victims. To stop violence against women is a moral consideration. Everyone should take responsibility to protect women and girls against violence. Governments, other private organizations, and communities should make contributions to prevent women against violence. Mass media should help frame violence information in an unbiased way. This will help fill in the gaps of such information to people. Reference Moore, Robert. Cybercrime: investigating high-technology computer crime. Newark, N.J.: LexisNexis/Matthew Bender, 2005.
