OVERTURE: MARCEL PROUST For a long time I used to go to bed early (Lawall, 2003)” is the well-known opening of the novel. The speaker tells his episodic encounters of arising from slumber without having any perception of his present state or location. It demands an instant of strain of establishing his thoughts and reclaiming his ego. It also suggests at the point where what comes next will involve the speaker with regaining back his identity, locating himself, and rousing, on several various height.

The novel expresses a significant connection between the realistic time which involves the narrator and the time on Marcel’s involuntary memory. The narrator’s constant surprising appearances in the house in Combry reveal the impression of involuntary memory. In the novel, it goes “…no doubt, from the Swann they had built up for their own purposes my family had left out, in their ignorance, a whole crowd of the details of his daily life in the world of fashion, details by means of which other people, when they met him, saw all the Graces enthroned in his face..(Lawall, 2003)”.

The narrator used a method of appearance and non-appearance which allowed him to creep up and leave from the scene. It has also allowed the narrator to highlight involuntary memory and expose the ego instinctively, providing numerous perspectives for the reader. Marcel approaches the overall idea of the novel in two ways. First, he uses memory. Second, he uses the writing. In Overture, Marcel patched his identity from a mob of involuntary, compound memory. Appearing in Combray, the writer takes away all the mirth and suffering inside him.

As there is a Supreme Being who provides Marcel with an involuntary memory, likewise is the writer that of invented, poetic memory that is made out of writing. In other words, although there are individual existence between the writer and narrator, they are repaired through the whole perception that the memory comes from two sources. In addition, Marcel discovered involuntary memory when the hint of the taste of madeleine opened up heights of arbitrary linkages. It illustrates the current time and the time present in Marcel’s involuntary memory (Graham, Hobbs & Marcus, 2010).
