The Passion of Wilde's Characters: Money and Social Status - Literature review Example

Algernon decides to visit the country house in Shropshire where Cecily, Miss Prism and Merriman are. In return, he does not act as an untrue country friend. He calls himself Ernest which is the same name as of Jack’s town name. Algernon hooks up with Cecily as Gwendolen arrives at Shropshire country house and she converses in the garden with Cecily hoping to be good friends. Their talking is started from the mentioning of Ernest Worthing in which they both think they are engaged to Ernest.

This continues for a while until both men arrive then the women realize none of them is by the name Ernest. As the play ends, Miss Prism put the jack in the Handbag and reveals his name as “Ernest” the playwright Oscar Wilde uses Lady Bracknell satirically to show how mothers control the society. People do not want to get on the bad side with her it is therefore advised that all to do as they are told to do it to be in the good mood with Lady Bracknell. In conclusion, it is clear that Wilde ridicules the passion which his characters have with money and social status.

Lady Bracknell is interested in looking for riches and class level of people in the society she goes ahead and asks Jack Worthing about Cecily Cardew’s guardian riches. “I had better ask you if Miss Cardew has any little fortune” (819). Wilde has applied the use of puns, changing popular sayings, mocking marriages and class, women satirizing. It is true that “The Importance of Ernest” is a satirical play which is full of humour. Examples include "Produce your explanation and pray to make it improbable."
