Sylvia Plath utilizes this metaphor to demonstrate that the little lass that loved to look into the mirror has at the moment sunk, and an elderly woman rises in her direction "like a terrible fish". This illustrates her hate for herself. Plath has looked into this mirror each day for an extended period, in addition to her seeing that she is becoming older and hates it. People get hold of a time period logic since it articulates "over and over", as well as "day after day". Plath had severe dejection and had exceedingly little consideration for herself.
This sonnet shows how the woman is worried about how old she has become as she looks into the mirror. Therefore, she tries to do things in life that would make her feel young and lively again even though she is quite old. (Suman 24). The initial line is appealing, “I am silver and exact. I have no biases.” This enlightens the reader of something attention-grabbing because silver is known to be something that is a representation of the moon, which has the capacity to mirror the sun, in addition to the mirror replicating everything.
Furthermore, the mirror enlightens people that it does not have before the judgment of what takes place. In the second, as well as third line, the mirror notifies us “Whatever I see I swallow immediately just as it is, unmisted by love or dislike.” This signifies that the mirror has the aptitude to take what it obtains instantly and shows it reverse exactly the manner in which it is. However, it will not demonstrate something dissimilar whether it adores the individual it shows or abhors them (Suman 26).
The lake refers to the candles and moon as liars because they do not offer enough light to provide a true mirror image.
