Existing in the Novel Nausea Existence and Essence The phrase that existence precedes essence reverses the philosophy that most of the philosophers have had in relation to this subject matter. Many times ,philosophers have thought and argued that essence precedes existence in certain ways and perspectives. Satre thinks and alludes that in most circumstances these philosophers are right in some ways and this is why he categorically states that “existence precedes essence” ,he states that this is not always true in all the circumstances.

The writer explains that this is only true in some instances and is not applicable under all the circumstances. His argument can be understood in the explanation of the paper and knife analogy which he uses to explain the issues of concern ,the argument states and tries to quantify that essence precedes existence and that essence is the action provided when you try to attempt to give the explanation of an issue or phenomenon. The essence of an issue gives its delimitation ,specifying its very properties and then stating the properties of which it cannot posses under the normal circumstances.

All this have to be achieved by the issue so that it can be whatever it is under its current state of affairs. The case of the paper and knife explains that the essence is a precedence of existence in that prior to the manufacture of the device, knife a blue print for its development or plan was developed or it existed in the mind of a designer or a developer somewhere. The very blue print or the plan is the essence . Generally what the writer means is that the paper knife essence ha s a precedence to the existence ,he is illustrating that the paper knife was first designed or planned before the very manufacturing or the production of the device for the use and mass distribution or the consumptive use.

Hence in this circumstance the essence precede the existence of a phenomenon. The paper and knife is actually an artifact and from this perspective we are able to conceptualize and understand what Satre is directing the discussion towards in a broad way and have a better understanding of the issues of concern. From this example we are in a position to understand that; In the cases of artifacts ,essence precedes the existence Further he argues that if there is the existence of God then he is the creator of the whole world and all the creations are works of divinity and are divine artifacts.

They are the designs of God then made according to his preexisting plans. Existence of God and Essence Theologically the preexistence of God and all his plans for the earth and its very formation is referred to as providence. God has his providence plan for the earth and the general human race and attempts to ensure that the human kind gets what he has planned for humans and the entire universe. Essence and the existence of God Satre argues that if essence precedes everything in the world then there is the existence of God.

Generally any plan or design requires a designer to conceptualize and put the issue into operation .Therefore if essence comes before existence then God exists. Conclusion Specifically there is only one being for which essence does not exist before precedence hence he has the slogan that existence exists before essence. That is only applicable with the case of God if he exists. However for human beings, essence comes before existence in most of their issues and phenomenon except on divine issues (Sartre).
