In this short story, Twain is making people see that this extreme sense of nationalism and self-righteousness usually make people blind to the results of their actions (Kiskis, 2009). The conclusion from this study states that Mark Twain was the representative of the democratic literary current. The creative activity of the writer became the point of the mixture for different art and literary tendencies and that is why the works by Mark Twain can be considered as those which synthesize romanticism and realism.
Even in his personal life, Twain was a funny he man. He was born during Halley's Comet, which appears every 75 years or so. As the return of the comet approached, he said: “I came in with Halley's Comet in 1835. It is coming again next year, and I expect to go out with it.
The first night that he stayed in the house he experienced a frightening experience which turned out to be an important lesson in fear. The atmosphere in the building is a confirmation of the fear of the narrator. During the course of the first night, he experienced noises of chains, heavy footsteps and different objects hitting each other.
This was the language that Mark Twain used to employ in his works. As one born during the era of literary realism, the American writer Mark Twain is regarded as “the philosopher and the humanitarian [who looks] through the twinkling eyes of the humorist” (Eliot)

Twain became uninterested in traditional American humor that attracted the attention of the people, who were not too unpretentious in literature.
