Half of a Yellow Sun Half of a Yellow Sun 258-324 [Chapters 19-24] In this part of the Novel, Olanna goes to Kano to visit her aunt and uncle together with her cousins. She passes through the Igbo Union Grammar School on her way to the airport, and recalls people having discussed abut the schools in the North not admitting children from Igbo. However, when she was with her neighbors, she sensed that things were in order as she had expected. This was the reason why she came to Kano. She happens to meet Abdulmalik, her Uncle’s friend, a Hausa man, whose job is to sell leather slippers and who gives her a pair of them; she restores her friendship with a former lover, the famous and handsome, Mohammed.

When she visits Kano, she is terrified as she with Mohammed notice a riot that had broken out and he is determined to take Olanna to the railway location. On their way there, Hausa words are heard echoing “The infidels must leave. The Igbo must go.” Next, they watch the destruction of her uncle’s homestead and the assassinated bodies of her uncle and aunt.“We are done with the entire family as per Allah’s will!” One of the angry men shouted in Hausa. He was familiar. It turned out that it was Abdulmark, whom Olanna noticed, and he was nudging a body on the ground using his foot.

Several other bodies were lying at the place just like dolls made of cotton. In this passage, the mystery of how and when neighbors kill each other is illustrated with great power. From this illustration, I get to be aware of the politics that bring about terrible events in African societies, when neighbors and friends turn out to be great enemies and murder each other. The worst of all is that the murderers use the name of Allah as a scapegoat for their actions. It also helps me as a reader to reach a compassionate understanding of how it happens that such assassinations can be real.

This passage contribute to the larger meaning of the text, in that, it encompasses various ways of understanding the events and ideas that shape the social world as we perceive it. The passage is a remarkable creation that serves as a device to provide background scenes on the context of the civil war and the history of Nigeria. Personally, it shows the outside world for its apathy, and explores the ignorance and arrogance that perpetuate conflicts. Ethnicity, which has been developed in the whole text is also illustrated in this passage, where the Hausa man shouts out that he had finished the Igbo family.

It is a subtly erotic passage, though powerful, and it depicts blood-curdling brutality and violence and this catches the reader’s attention to read on and on. The pain, horror and suffering of the Igbo people have been taken away and given them a novelistic importance, and by so doing, develop precisely the intended historical theme of the novel.Work CitedChimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
