Walden vs. Conformism: Compare Fuller’s Women in the Nineteenth Century with “Self-Reliance” or Walden with regards to the responsibilities of the individual within a conformist society. According to Sarah Fuller, the responsibilities of an individual within a conformist society include self responsibility, righteousness, non-hypocrisy, anti-slavery, giving women the right to vote, giving women more civil rights, legal protection for women, liberation of women, virtuous and self-reliancy.

Women face gender role conflict when they feel that they cannot break out of their stereotypes. Fuller had similar views to Catherine Beecher, who advocated the mother and teacher as the best vocations for women. By this, she conformed to her society’s conventional expectations of women. Fuller contradicts herself when she said she approved of self-reliance but later said that women should sacrifice themselves by consecration to God. We cannot agree there is self-reliance when one depends on God.

(Lauter 1697-1719). Emerson, like Fuller, also believed in self-reliance. However, he differed from Fuller because he was a nonconformist. He said that when people are forced to conform against their will, they are hypocrites. He encouraged honesty in speech. (Lauter 1621-1638). Both Fuller and Emerson are verbose, because they use many words to relay a simple message. He said that consecration to God was good but being self-reliant in action was even better. In this, he differed from Fuller; he did not rely on God. . society include self responsibility, righteousness, non-hypocrisy, anti-slavery, giving women the right to vote, giving women more civil rights, legal protection for women, liberation of women, virtuous and self-reliancy.

Fuller was a staunch Christian whereas Emerson was not. Both Fuller and Emerson presented their arguments well by quoting supporting evidence to back up their claims. Basically, we can conclude that Fuller was a conformist while Emerson was a nonconformist.Question 3.
