Introduction Writing may not only encompass simple techniques that rule out common mistakes of grammatical errors, punctuation and spelling but a reflective and accurate presentation of thoughts and ideas that responds and responds to the needs of the readers. Good and effective writers or writing clearly defines the purpose by making definite points; supports that point with specific information or general information where need be, connects the supporting information and arranges it in a coherent manner, and ensures appropriate use of words and sentences in correct customized order.
Great writers are concise on the fundamental traits as writers and educators and emphasize on specific societal phenomenon within a given span of time and period; a product of hard work and much practice through research and analysis, and trying to connect these phenomenon by putting them down in a simple language that is clear and comprehensive to meet the readers’ expectations. It should be noted that being a writer is different from being a technical writer in that, an effective writer can be smart English student who can construct English sentences for the teacher alone; technical writers process information and disseminate it to a large crowd of readers with diverse expectations and perspectives about the subject matter and thus the need to dig deep into the brain of their subject matter expertise.
William Faulkner was the best writer with incorporation of various experimental styles in his literary works; a good connection of his works with the contemporary society and flexibility in techniques, the ability to write and detail oriented. Great writers stylistically express words and phrases in their original and primary meaning; giving the writer’s distinctive meaning which in most cases should rhyme with the reader’s expectation and analogous comprehension. His presentation and tone in his poems; combination of formal and informal articulation and the art of presentation that each word is clearly understood to its fullest complexity and extremity, gives the connection of his works with the Lafayette County where he spent his most life.
For instance, in one of his short stories, A Rose for Emily, he brought out the theme of resistance to change; a theme that existed during the times as a result Boston migrations and a high articulation of Puritan cultural ideals, a conflict of cultural ideologies but presented in formal worksi. He presented the conflict between the southern aristocracies by showing the reluctance to change by Emily Grierson despite her turnabouts in her social status; with her continuing to behave haughtily and reflection of priority and roles change due to change of governments and rulers, a phenomenon associated with the County at the time.
Great writers will present their point of views through a consciousness written equivalent thoughtful processes; in a loose interior monologue or in connections to his/ her actions, a reflection of the total society’s phenomenon and presented in a multitudinous feelings which should pass through the reader’s mind while reading. On his part, Faulkner wrote highly emotional stories that were subtle and complex; deeply flawed and disturbed characters to emphasize on his subject topic and eccentric characters with ambivalent gender roles, combined with sinister stories of crime, violence, and poverty, phenomenon that touches the society2.
In addition, his grotesque stories that covered southern aristocrats, the working class and their lifestyles in relation to poor white and the agrarian revolution, gave an insight of e societal phenomenon at the time and the incorporation of cerebral presentation of the main themes gives his works the multitudinous feeling to the reader across the generations. Another characteristics of a good writer is his/her abilities to write; mastering the language of interest/ presentation to tapestry of words and paragraphs, presenting it in the best ways understood by the reader, and conceptual ability to toggle among various literary genres to communicate his/her message across generations and age groups3.
His flexibility of techniques and styles of writing enabled him to shift in between genres; which kept him constantly learning, the ability to dip among different hemispheres of writing and critical thinking, understanding the technical inputs and the creative way of presenting the information to the reader. It also helps the writer understand every detail of a phenomenon in a different perspective by enabling him learn new tools and techniques to use as a writer and a presenter or a story teller.
His works are associated with modernism of self-conscious break with traditional styles of poetry and verse; Maxim perspective/ approach of “making it new”, and reassessment of assumptions made in the society in a bid to find the present applications, a prerequisite of modern literature with respect to the society’s revolution. Conclusion William Faulkner might not have been known until the publishing of his works in 1930’s and receiving of the Nobel Prize in literature in 1949 but his work influenced the way people looked at social phenomenon at the time.
His application of different styles and techniques of writing; flexibility and detail oriented experience and success in different genres, modification and basis of his traditional literature of modernism and South Renaissance, qualifies him to be a great writer of all times. Endnotes
