Since time in seventeen hundred, American literature involved only a small number of article works. The articles described the Americans in the context, which they lived in. Nationalism in the literature of any country is portrayed in several ways. This depends with the ability of the nation’s inhabitants to adopt uprising changes in literature.
Existence of nationalism helps individuals develop good communication skills. Characteristics of nationalism include increased morale on individuals in devoting to their own nation. Another characteristic of nationalism in American literature is the concern of individuals’ physical restrictions. This involves understanding literature and the ways that individuals can interact with others. Finally, nationalism is in any country characterized by imperialism. Significance of nationalism Nationalism plays a vital role in building of nations as well as literature of a particular nation.
However, importance of nationalism to any country depends on inhabitants’ perspective. In America, nationalism was significant in different ways. For instance, it resulted to improvement of essential communication skills. It led to cordial relations during the colonial period. Nationalism asserted that individuals work together towards completion of a common goal, which was to win over other opposing nations (Kramer 4). The urge to devote to one’s own nation indicates that an individual is less likely to commit crimes or go against the stipulation of the state laws.
This is important especially when reviewing the literary works of that nation. Nationalism here ensures that individuals base their review work on aspects of the state’s literature. In addition, nationalism is significant in changing of some traditional morals. Nationalism and literature in America In America, culture of the colonies (specifically thirteen colonies) expanded even though there was a great challenge to the growth of territories. American nationalism denotes that there is unity prevailing amongst the American inhabitants.
It aimed at promoting the already existing unity among people of different communities. Several factors that affected quick development of literature in America include isolation of particular individuals, war, and poor communication between the immigrants and inhabitants. These factors impede gradual development of literature in diverse ways depending on the character traits of individuals. Liberalism was the crucial element in identifying an individual with the American nation (Franco 126).
Types of nationalism There are two distinguished types of nationalism, which include civic nationalism and ethnic nationalism. The American government with the purpose of carrying out legal tasks institutionalized civic nationalism. Based on legal entity, civic nationalism sought to explore concepts of coherency, establishment of a universal language, and lastly, explore traditions (Dawahare 84). Ethnic nationalism dealt with nativism of Americans through which American inhabitants combined efforts to drive away immigrants.
