Rowling INTRODUCTION ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’ represents the third novel of Harry Potter series. This novel inculcates adventurous journey of the protagonist Harry Potter and revolves around themes of betrayal and forgiveness. This novel entails the investigation executed by Harry Potter, Ron Weasly and Hermione Granger about the prisoner named Sirius Black who escaped from Azkaban. Sirius Black is believed to be one of the old allies of Lord Voldermort. The story revolves around different animals which include a Rat, Cat, Buckbeak, Werewolf, Owl and Dog. These animals are portrayed in different manner throughout the story. The animals are observed to be playing significant role in this story depicting their positive and the negative role played that lays a greater impact on the human characters within the story. In this regard, this book is identified to symbolize the interrelationship amid the human characters and animals. MAIN BODY The first chapter reflects about Harry being stuck in Dursley’s house for his summer vacation. He was expecting letters from his friend Ron and Hermione, during the summer vacation. Hedwig, the Owl of Harry Potter gifted to him by the keeper of Hogwarts; Hagrid, use to carry post to his friends, who were of his kind i.e. witch. Harry’s relatives, i.e. Dursley’s family were Muggles (common human being without any magical power) and did not like Hedwig carrying post to Harry’s friends, so they kept it in a cage. The Dursley family allowed Harry Potter to let out Hedwig from the cage at night, only on one condition that Harry Potter will not use Hedwig for sending letters to his friends (Rowling 1-15). It is identified that owl represented as a way of post, which signify the importance of owl at that time for passing on the messages. The chapter also signifies a friendly and a positive relationship being developed amid owl and Harry, which signifies about the helping nature of animals. The second chapter reveals the news about the escape of prisoner named Sirius Black from the prison of Azkaban. This chapter also reflected about the rude attitude of Dursley family towards Harry Porter. Aunt Marge, the sister of Vernon Dursley visited the family with her pet Ripper, which is a dog. A warm relationship was shown between the Ripper and Aunt Marge (Rowling 16-30). This chapter comprehends that dogs are used as pets from medieval times. The interrelationship developed amid Aunt Marge and Ripper was very deep as Ripper use to obey order of Aunt Marge and protect her from any odd situation, which was depicted when dog hold on to the legs of the Aunt flying in the sky like a balloon after being spelled by Harry. The third chapter revealed that Harry Potter was missing Hedwig in order to contact his friends Ron and Hermione. Harry Potter boarded the Knight bus and that dropped him at Daigon Alley. Harry Potter met with Hedwig and was very happy (Rowling 31-48). It is determined that Harry Potter was pleased to find Hedwig and shared his feelings with Hedwig signifying friendly attittude. In the fourth chapter, Harry Potter met with his friends Ron and Hermione. There are two animals which include a cat and a rat named Crookshanks and Scabbers respectively. Crookshanks was the pet of Hermoione and Scabbers was the pet of Ron (Rowling 49-68). It is identified from this chapter that interrelationship is recognized amid human and animal, where animals are kept as favorite pets. The fifth chapter reveals the train journey of Harry, Ron and Hermione in Hogwarts Express. The chapter signifies the different incidents that took place in their journey to Hogwarts and their interaction with Dementor (Rowling 69-95). In this chapter, the love Harry, Ron and Hermione have for Hedwig, Scabbers and Crookshanks as their pets is identified. The sixth chapter signifies first day to school after summer vacation, when Harry, Ron and Hermione met with Hagrid, who has been promoted as a professor of magical creature. Furthermore, this chapter reflects about the adventurous journey of Harry flying high on back of Buckbeak the magical bird, which is a hippogriff (Rowling 96-122). The chapter signifies the superiority of animals, where it has shown that Buckbeak seek respect at first, only then it gets friendly. Negative character of the Buckbeak has been depicted by showing that, it can kill anyone, if not handled with love and respect. Chapter seven reveals about Professor Lupin’s class on confronting the Boggarts. This class was intending to provide the students a lively experience with ‘Defense against Dark Art and Dark Creatures’ (Rowling 123-140). Herein, it can be ascertained that the chapter signifies about children’s fear for animals and insects and their control counting on this aspect. The eighth chapter reveals about the punishment held for Buckbeak’s act, where he injures Malfoy, as the boy tried to disrespect the bird (Rowling 141-161). It signifies that, there remains a negative part within all animals. It is reflected when they are not treated properly and with care and love. Ninth Chapter reveals about Harry’s second time confrontation with real Dementors. This chapter signifies about negative impact of incidents on the mind of any person (Rowling 162-182). In the tenth chapter, Harry revealed the secrets in relation to the Marauder’s Map, which shows everyone’s activities within Hogwarts. Harry also acquired adequate knowledge relating to Black. In this very chapter, Harry found activity relating to Peter Pettigrew, who has been declared as dead by others (Rowling 183-210). Eleventh chapter depicts about the gift i.e. Firebolt broomstick received by Harry. Firebolt is the fastest racing broom gifted to the winner of Quidditch match (Rowling 211-232). The twelfth chapter signifies about the magical spell taught by Lupin to Harry recognized as ‘Patronus charm’, which assists in keeping the Dementor away. Harry practiced this spell on a Boggart (Rowling 233-251). The thirteenth chapter states about the continuing conflict amid Ron and Hermione for losing Scabbers with the perception that Crookshanks ate Scabbers (Rowling 252-268). It can be comprehended that deepest affection and companionship developed amid humans and animals. The fourteenth chapter reveals rude behavior of Snape towards Harry. Snape also insulted Harry’s father by stating him to be rude, who use to be his classmate in Hogwarts (Rowling 269-290). In the fifteenth chapter, it depicts about the final Quidditch match, where Gryffindor won the match lead by Harry Potter. It also revealed about the loyalty of Black for James and Lilly Potter (Rowling 349-357). It is identified that humans and animals are interrelated as they are conscious in helping each other at certain circumstances. It is comprehended from the nineteenth chapter that Lupin and Black wanted to kill Peter for his betrayal. Peter stated that he did all these as he was scared of Voldemort (Rowling 358-377). The relationship amid humans and animals in this chapter is important in order to have complete information about the story. This chapter further signifies about the danger posed by the werewolf, it was ready to kill any one coming within its way, which depicts the negative aspect of the animal’s interface with humans (Rowling 378-387). The twenty-first chapter signifies the Time-Tunner of Hermione was used with the intention to travel back in time in order to save Buckbeak. Moreover, saving Buckbeak will assist Hermione and Harry to save Black (Rowling 386-415). It is identified that humans and animals are presented as a symbol of care and protection. The twenty-second chapter reveals that Buckbeak and Black’s escape from the prison. Moreover, in the train, Harry received a letter from Black thanking him for his help. This chapter also reveals that Black actually was the godfather of Harry (Rowling 416-421). It signifies that animals and humans have positive interrelationship with other. CONCLUSION It can be comprehended from the summary of the chapters in the book that there are several animals that have been identified within the story playing important roles in the life of humans. These animals are depicted both in a positive and negative way carrying a significant importance in the story. The animals have played different role enduring companionship, friendship, and enemy. The story emphasizes that humans and animals have positive interrelationship with others. These animals are mostly used as pets by humans.
