? of the of the of the Same kind of Different as me Summary Within the text of “same kind of different as me,” is an emotional and painful account of two men, Ron hall and Denver. The most interesting thing about the book is the eternal friendship of Ron and Denver and their redemption and connection to God. This is also a true story about a life changing love of Ron and his wife Deborah. Deborah is a courageous woman who has a dream to save humanity. Hence, it is “a true life-tale of two men and a remarkable woman.” Denver is a black slave who is utterly desperate and bitter because of his worthless life due to poverty, but he ends up loving God and the people whom he used to hate once. Similarly, Ron hall who is a self-centered aristocrat, gives up his lavish living by serving humanity and building a homeless shelter for the poor. Hence, there are two compelling stories that revolve around two different men from entirely different origin who are searching for meaning in life Ron’s life begins to transform when he and his wife start spending time with the unfortunate. During this time, they happen to meet a black man who makes him realize that life is not about being too materialistic rather the true meaning lies in simplicity. In Ron’s words “ I had no clue that God in his elaborate sense of humor is planning to change my life”(p.10). Poem Deborah, a beautiful lady, Whose heart was as pure as a daisy, As with good deeds, she did inspire many She had a wonderful dream To make a world a better place But one sad day the sun’s bloody rays took her away But before sinking below She did accomplish her goal As she left the world to glow forever And is now missed like the sky misses the sun at night. Figurative language is used in poems when the poet wants to compare one thing with something else. In the poem above the figurative speech is in the last line “the sky misses the sun at night.” and “as pur as a baby.” “Similarly, the imagery used in the above poem is “sun’s bloody rays” and “sinking below.” Figurative language in poems is essential because it shows people’s feelings and emotions very well. Moreover, it explains the characters in detail and makes reading fun. Every good poet uses imagery in his poems because it involves details and stir up emotions in readers. Imagery is the most effective tool that makes the reader feel the five senses. Most important passage in the book One of the best passages in “same kind of different as me” is when Ron and Denver are talking about fishing. Denver asks Ron how “the white People” fish. He is astonished to hear that the whites throw the fish back after catching it. He is surprised because he cannot believe that anybody could throw back a delicious food after getting it. Moreover, he told Denver that “when colored people catch fish they are very proud of it because it sustains them” (p 174 ). Hence, keeping the fish incident in mind, he asks his friend “if you is fishin for a friend you just gon’ catch and release, then I ain’t got no desire to be your friend” (p. 174 ). One can find a lot of meaning in Denver’s words when he explains why they do not let the fish go once it is caught. The underlying meaning is that Black folks are more honest when it comes to friendship and they do not betray a friend and remain loyal till the end. The truth of the matter is that friendship meant a lot to Denver and he could give his life for his friends. The conversation between ron and denver is very meaningful and makes one think about the meaningless friendships and relationships today. In today’s materialistic world friendships are just made to fulfill ones selfish desires or for some other personal gain. Friendships like in the case of Denver and ron hardly exist in today’s world. The society teaches us the phenomenon of “catch and release” when it comes to intimacy. Many people keep friendships till their desires are fulfills then they release or let them go. The relationship between Ron and Denver became very powerful because it was not created in a single day, but with patience, tolerance and time it developed into a beautiful bonding, one of the biggest reasons was that during hard times the two friends did not leave or disliked each other. Moreover, they did not try to find some other companion to solve their issues, but they helped and supported each other through compassion and kindness. As in Ron Hall’s words, “bein friends is like being soldiers in the army. You live together, you fight together, you die together” ( ).This book leaves the readers a powerful message about how friendships are shaped. Although the two friends came from entirely different backgrounds but they respected and valued their bondage a lot. Purpose of minor characters In the book “same kind of different as me” by Ron Hall and Denver, despite the two main characters around which the whole story surrounded, Deborah who although had a minor role to play in the story but she was the one who transformed Ron and Denver’s life by encouraging them to volunteer to help out at Union Gospel Mission. She was a very intelligent women who loved compassion. Deborah died but before dying, she advised her husband to work for humanity. Moreover, she saw a dream about Denver and related it to “Ecclesiastes 9:15” and told her husband that the man he saw in her dream “a wise man who changes the city” (p.54), who was no other but Denver who lived on the streets and was a vagabond, but was a caring and loving person from inside. Hence, Deborah although did not show up much in the narrative but served as a contrast and foil to the main characters.
