? Feminism in Korea Introduction Feminism has been on the rise since long time. It is because of various social cultural roles in the society. Several people manage this (segregation) through establishing ways, which smooth the progress of gender equality. Feminism is a compilation of activities, which aim at describing, launching and shielding the political and economic status of women. Feminists prove this wrong as they establish theories which aim to recognize the nature of discrimination through probing women’ social roles. The essay brings out the comparison and distinction between the past and now, on women and men’s role in the society (Hadley 45). There is also an indication of the reason as to why there is a different role and character in literature. The Korean men were involved in making and changing the history of the society. Their roles are well defined and have their basis concerning the society. The writer tries to bring out sexism through the roles of men. They have the ability to control other people. Women in Korea were not to contribute or propose for any changes to in their society. The society portrays discrimination and thus makes women know all that they have to perform. It was easy for them to overcome some obstacles leading to isolation (Hadley 46). Comparison between the role of men and women in the society during the olden days Both genders recognize the existence of freedom to participate in changing the history of their society. Several men see the importance of women’s contributions. On the other hand, women are searching a way of becoming visible in the society. They both at some point cite isolation of women basing their argument on the political and cultural values. According to men, women should not move out of the homestead. They say women are invisible beings in the society and should attach themselves with household work. On the other hand, women see isolation from the point of denied political rules through the set rules by leaders. They say women are not negligible to raise their voices in the society. They had no qualifications to go to schools. Women would also not get employment opportunities in any organization. There is also the issue on wages to both men and women. Men would involve themselves in several tasks and get some payment after completing those tasks. However, women would not get any payment since they had less knowledge. In contrast, there were no educational facilities for women (Hyun 70). However, today women acquire more knowledge through attending learning institutions. Knowledge was only with the men as they were the most superior persons in the society (Hadley 49). In the past, women had nothing to invent unlike today, where the economy subjects women to employment. This helps them make investments in their capital accounts and education levels. Women balance their employment opportunities with the tasks they have to perform at their homes. In the past, women would only undertake household chores. Women have the mandate to ensure that they keep the houses tidy. Today, women have become beings that are more social. That is, through employment, they interact with different persons. In the past, they rarely had a chance for interaction. Furthermore, there are other contradicting statements like women subordinating to men and letting the men be the heads of the families. There is also the aspect of women attaining certain levels of education so that they get reasonable jobs. Character of men in Korea There is a rise in the number of female working in managerial posts and a few working as clerical officers. The men have the oppressive being in them. They mock women and see no good value for being visible. They highly deter their women from engaging themselves in politics and other societal jobs. Men are selfish in that they require no education to the females. They make women lose their names soon after they get married. They are of high morals as they consider themselves the heads of the families. Character of women in Korea The women in Korea indicate several characters. For instance, they are obedient in that they remain at home voiceless, as they are aware that their husbands are the family heads. They are naive in that they remain calm in case of a proposal in the changes of the society history. They have much hope in them as they foresee freedom in the coming generations (Schroer 70). Today’s women are courageous as they undertake some of tasks, which others say they are for men. In general, there are actually no specific duties for men. All jobs should be gender sensitive to promote equality in the society. Reason behind the difference in the roles and character The difference in the roles and character comes due to various reasons. Such reasons include-culture, outward show, psychological description, what people say and how they say it. It can also emanate from what the characters do, what others say about them, their reaction to others and lastly, how they react to themselves (Hyun 72). To start with, the characters’ way of life depicts how best they perform their jobs. Culture influences the characters to bring out the all that happens in their society. The appearance of the characters is also a determinant on how they will take their parts. The prevailing situation is also another source of influence on the character. Azalea (79) says, “in spite of this I found myself rummaging quickly through my handbag for my old address book”. Sociological background of the characters In the past, Korean women did not have a chance to speak out their opinions. They were to remain silent when their husbands do the communication. Conveying information was on the side of men, and this was a sign that men were of much worth. This was a way of diminishing the power of women in the society. The effect is that it leads to a decrease in the liveliness of women and subjects them to poor and unfavourable environment. Therefore, this prohibits existence of social welfare among the society members. Women find it difficult to carry out their normal duties in a lively manner. On the other hand, men view themselves as the great leaders in the society. They appraise their masculinity powers and expect no objection from women. To them, women should not raise their voices. They are some of the minute beings thriving through the communities. Men highly contribute to the panicking of women. They instil fear to their women making them keep mum throughout the conversations. They (men) expect their women to be submissive to men in the society. The government should intervene and use certain tactics to make men see the sense and need of women in the society. Overlooking women should end since they (women) in various occasions depict some intelligence in their way of dealing with state of affairs. Historical background of feminism in Korea This was because of the feminists’ activities in the olden days a period they refer to as “second-wave feminism”. This is the major influence to the introduction of feminism in conjunction with females studying in the society (Schroer 74). In the past, women studies were to a certain limit. It is until the early 2000 when there is establishment of full lessons for the studies women should undertake. Their studies involve a certain subject matter, which imparts ideas, and equality draws in the scholarship practices. Their study mainly focuses on handy and serviceable lessons, which aid in the development of women in general. The vigorous action of feminist study had its basis spreading in various movements. It was to deal with environmental issues concerning women, the political views of women and feminists’ ability to bring the feminism theory to bypass. It further involved rights relating to reproduction, animals and homosexuals (Hyun 72). Lastly, there were issues relating to gender disparity and the privileges of racial minority. Problems associated with the history of Korean feminism Women in Korea had some difficulties in the bringing up the discussion of feminism. There was a requirement of an analysis of the differences existing between men and female in Korea. For the analysis, they consider the materials, which are already in existence. It becomes a bit hectic to revise and formulate the rules. This is because men highly oppose the existence of feminism. The community view on women greatly affects feminists. This is due to several distinguishing reasons. In Korea, women would hardly get knowledge to advance their writing skills. They were lacking the basic writing skills. The main goal to point up women visibility in Korea was through Korean literature (Hyun 74). The authors to these literatures are to incite a discussion concerning masculinity and feminist, accents, and power from the perspective of a feminist. Korea people were in searching ways to make the women gain confidence in what they do or plan to do. However, the experiences that women would persevere were in a way deterring them from exercising full power over their demands. Their experiences in terms of physical condition, political, social cultural and religion are very different from those of men. Coercion of women is everywhere and makes it harder for women to achieve their goals. Men continue viewing women as lesser beings in the society. They continue to diminish their morals but will always say that women are on the wrong side. This subjects women to opt for the best alternative to avoid all causes of isolation and the overlooking aspect. Women need to cooperate to have a strong foundation towards the fight against isolation in the society. Women should choose from amongst themselves, representatives who will air out their grievances. They should be brave enough with a lot of confidence to win those they are to challenge. The Japanese government turn Korean women to prostitution and their men accuse women instead of fighting for their rights. Eun & Yolanda (454) state, “The Korean government regarded this as shameful and immoral”. Women representatives should work hand in hand with the government and ensure that each of their grievances has an answer (Hyun 75). If no answer now, they should have a record of the pending issues. On the other hand, men should avoid discrimination and view women as beings requiring as much attention as they (men) do. Women can perform various tasks even better than some men can. Leaders should ensure that all traces of racial segregation in the society. This will help enhance equality in the society and hence a reduction in conflicts that may arise due to discrimination. Summary In summary, feminism results from men overlooking the existence women in then society. In Korea, women are to stay back at home while the men are free to go out. Men in Korea have a negative attitude towards women. They see their women as voiceless and further say that they have to remain silent when men are conversing. Ch’oe (86) states, “I kept my eyes on the proofs and made myself as small as possible in my corner, but at the same time listened intently to their conversation”. The women there have no opportunity to seek for jobs. Further, the cultural norms do not allow them to participate in any political meeting. Women today have been fighting this through the establishment of organisations, which support women and fight against discrimination. Conclusion In summary, feminism is one of the challenges that women today face. In contrast, there were no educational facilities for women. However, today women acquire more knowledge through attending learning institutions (Schroer 77).
