3. Deborah Garrison’s poem Please Fire Me insists that finding a right man is the remedy to all life’s problems, how true is this? How does Garrison portray the battle cry of most professional single women? What effect has the slight vulgarity of this poem give to any reader in achieving the themed message? 4. Response Paper Marge Piercy’s poem talks about a female secretary at work comparing herself with a variety of office supplies and apparatus. She mentions that she is perceived more as part of the office equipment rather than a human being. The theme of female dehumanisation is evident, in many lines of the poem, where the persona compares her specific body parts with specific objects, in an office setting. The author employs a number of stylistic devices, but metaphorical language is most common.

The narrator sounds herself as a machine. The relation of a human being with a machine expresses the secretary’s feeling of being regarded as an object and not human. For example, in the first line of the first stanza, she describes her hips as a desk (Piercy line 1). This shows how the author literary employs metaphors to develop the poem’s main theme. In addition, the setting of the poem occurs at a time when most women were primarily employed as office secretaries. The other stylistic device the author employs to develop the main theme of the poem is imagery.

This involves the creation of images, in the reader’s mind, to aid in the understanding of the poem. The use of imagery exhaustively relates to the theme of female dehumanisation. Anyone reading the poem cannot help but imagine the secretary as a machine. The line, “from my ears hang a chain of paper clips” (Piercy 2-3) gives a reader the picture of the secretary’s earrings being paperclips. The image of the secretary as a robot is also evident. The “robot”, which only operates on instructions and command, has been used to develop the theme of female dehumanisation.

Piercy also employs the use of humour to give a splendid effect. The whole description of the secretary’s body parts as objects in an office is comical. An example is “my head is a switchboard where crossed lines crackle” (Piercy 9-10). This line is a combination of both imagery and humour. Symbolism of how unfortunate and twisted female identities were disregarded, in the 1970s, is also portrayed. The writer shows how women were perceived as pieces of equipment. This is used to support the theme of female dehumanisation with the description of the secretary as a machine, and her body parts as office equipment.

Therefore, the Secretary Chant relates to the movie, From Persepolis, which shares the same theme and message. The poem also shares the same meaning with the movie From Persepolis. The animated film is about a girl who watches things happening through her young. The producer, of this film, also focuses on the theme of female repression and disregard during the seventy’s. The use of imagery, humour and symbolism also portray the whole theme of the film. Additionally, the use of animations, itself, is to some
