Conan Doyle studied medicine at University of Edinburgh from 1876- 1870 during which he began writing stories; his earliest novels included works like ‘The Haunted Grange of Goresthorpe’ and ‘The Mystery of Sasassa Valey’. ‘A Scandal in Bohemia’ was Arthur Conan Doyle’s 56 Sherlock Holmes short stories. The Strand Magazine published these stories in the year 1891, and due to a distinguished characterization it was admired by everyone. I liked the theme of the story a lot because it was uniquely plotted and the characters played their role back to front moreover the wittiness of the young lady Irene Adler who has earned never ending appreciation.
Reading the story was a source of never ending fun and has left a deep impression on my mind which will always be a foundation of amusement for me .I often read this story over and over again to change my mood as it has a great deal of mystery in it. These days we can barely find such high quality story ‘a scandal in Bohemia’ will always remain a treasure to the English literature. The main purpose of author in this story is to open eye of all such rich antagonist people who look down upon people with average socio economic status which is a major conflict between the relations these days.
Since Irene Adler was an opera singer in the story who was extraordinary intelligent and beautiful but yet the Duke of Cassel-Felstein and King of Bohemia who was a stereotype and thought that she would use their pictures so as to blackmail him although she had no such intentions and it was an imagery thought by the king. The author is trying to point out a fact that it is not money which makes people superior but it is the level of intellect and a good personality which makes them highly ranked over others and the two things should never be mixed with each other.
The story posed writer’s point successfully as in the end the detective Sherlock Holmes and the King was touched by the lady’s act and the level of her intelligence which made both of them admire her; this can be easily judge by the line said by the king ‘Would she not have made an admirable queen? Is it not a pity she was not on my level?’ that means he actually regret the fact that if they were together then Irene Adler would have proved to be one of the smartest queen and it was not her who was not at the level of King but it was actually the King who was inferior to her in level of alertness and intellect.
Moreover, Holmes also started admiring the lady as he replied to king’s question by saying ‘Miss Adler is indeed on a much different level ‘by which he admitted that she was indeed at a higher level than the King and Holmes wanted the photographs of Adler as a token of appreciation for his role in the case so that he could pay the tribute to the lady by keeping her photo as a souvenir. Holmes also thought that the lady made her gender superior by her act and she was indeed a highly ranked woman among all her gender.
This is the greatest lesson for life time that how little things can make you achieve dignity in sight of people who always suppressed you. In this story Dr.Watson was the narrator of the story, who recently got married and was paying a visit to Sherlock. Although Dr.Watson was a third person but he was there throughout all the events so he could give his views unbiased about the other characters. It is a commonly used technique in English literature. The third person narration has been used in many other stories too. The
