During that period, such love stories had tragic consequences, though they are not robbed of its artistic touch, intense passion and the ultimate sacrifice of one’s life for the cause of immortal love. Romeo is a part of the Montague family, son of the Patriarch of Montague while, Juliet is a part of the Capulet family, daughter of the Patriarch of Capulet. The story is shaped by the fateful interaction and encounter of the two, under unprecedented circumstances when Romeo after being persuaded by his cousin Benvolio attends the ball arranged by the Capulet’s. In search of Rosalin, his infatuation, he eventually chances upon Juliet in the ball. He instantly falls in love with her. That night he sneaks into the Capulet’s orchard and overhears Juliet confessing her love for Romeo. The two meet in secrecy, hidden from the eyes of the two families and the public gaze. Romeo’s confidant Friar Laurence secretly marries them off, but on hearing about the marriage, Juliet’s cousin Tybalt confronts Romeo. In this event, Mercutio gets fatally wounded and dies when he chooses to confront Tybalt on Romeo’s behalf. ...
People believe Juliet is dead and the same news falls on Romeo’s ear. On hearing this Romeo commits suicide. When Juliet wakes up and goes to meet Romeo he finds him dead and in turn she takes her own life. Friar Laurence, recollects the story of the two "star-cross'd lovers". The two families are reconciled by their children's deaths and they agree to put an end to their age-old violent feud. The play concludes with the Prince's elegy for the lovers: "For never was a story of more woe / than this of Juliet and her Romeo." (Shakespeare 1) Thus is this play we see a strong influence of the two leading characters of Romeo and Juliet. They represent the typical families in those times of late 16th century, orthodox and immensely guided by self respect and ego. The clash of the two families eventually claims the lives of two innocent people in love. Romeo on one hand was the ideal lover, brave, determined and one sighted in Juliet’s love. On the other hand Juliet was delicate, beautiful and deeply in love with Romeo. Their interactions happen in the veil of concealment, away from the prying eyes of the orthodox and unforgiving medieval urban society.
