The Cultural Event Insert The cultural event Visiting the Natural History Museum located in London was one of the most interestingaspects of my life. Previously I had heard many stories that described this particular museum and this day indeed was a true manifestation. The museum is located in central London specifically along Exhibition road, South Kensington and was established in the year 1881. It is one of the museums with magnificent scenery that one cannot take for granted, the largest natural museum in Britain.

The morning of 25th day, February was a memorable and most enjoyable day in my life. The temperatures around London city this day were chilly and humid (39% Lowest and up to 100% highest humidity values), with temperatures going as low as 34o F and as highest temperatures being 59o F .This day I together with my closest neighborhood friends organized for a tour of the Natural History museum in order to have adventurous moments of this place. It was a weekend and indeed this was the best time to do so as we had a lot of time.

Even as we approached the gate of the museum, we could not hold our joy at how marvelous the museum looked from a far. The museum was surrounded by variety of trees that signified its richness in terms of biodiversity. A gentle wind that kept on blowing swayed the trees from one direction to the other further improving the aesthetic component around this vicinity. The hospitality of this environment was not only demonstrated by nature but also by the museum guards who were excited about our coming.

The natural museum in London is housed in a huge building that also serves as a landmark in London city called the Water house building that soars much above the skyline and its huge grand facade reinforced with basalt columns is just awe inspiring. While inside the museum, we were amazed to realize that it was not only an exempt charity but also an abode to several species and specimens numbering about seventy million, which are drawn from various assemblages such as entomology, botany, zoology, mineralogy and paleontology that range from microscopic slide to mammoth skeletons.

Actually, the museum houses the largest and most important collections of natural history in the world. The museum is not only known for its conservation activities but also for its research activities. The researchers use the collections to study the natural world in the past and at present. This is true given that it hosts a range of historic as well as scientific-based value collections such as the Darwinian collections that signified the evolutionary process of man over the ages. We were assigned to a tour guide who first issued us with some brochures and handouts that hinted to us in a nutshell the things to expect during the tour.

We were taken through to see the various collections. What fascinated me most were the exhibitions at the mammal hall. This place contained skeletons of large mammals such as dinosaurs and whales especially the blue whale skeletons. All my life I had never seen these creatures and was very surprised at how gigantic the skeletons were. Of interest was the dinosaurs that we were informed lived millions of years ago. We were shown around the dinosaur area and were glad to learn about the triceratops horridus skeleton that was rather scaring but interesting to learn about.

Another display that excited us most was the skeleton of a Blue whale that was introduced to this museum in 1934 and it weighed 10 tonnes and 25m in length. The museum guard informed us that since having a cast of such a large mammal was expensive, model scale had been used to skillfully bring out the structure together. We also managed to visit the Earth lab, a gallery with collections mainly of geological origin and comprising of fossil, rocks and mineral specimens. It was getting late in the day when we finally decided to visit the lasting impressions that contained specimens of rocks, minerals and plants.

There were a variety of trees that enveloped the museum both in gardens and parks. I was most interested in the Great Holly tree that contained bright red fruit berries with leaves that are glossy and green in colour. It is a native tree species scientifically called Ilex aquifolium. My friends were now getting exhausted and we therefore decided to take a rest under shady revitalizing trees to have some snacks that we had carried along with us. It was time to leave and indeed all my friends that it was an experience that they had never had in their life.
