Does Active Learning Improve Students' Knowledge of and Attitudes Toward Research Methods?  Journal of College Science Teaching, 40(4), 38-45.  This quantitative study examined 54 first-year students majoring in sports medicine enrolled in a required undergraduate research methods course during the spring 2009 semester. Each student was randomly selected. The students were administered a pre and post course Likert scale questionnaire to examine their attitudes and content knowledge for research methods. The authors contemplated that the lecture format has historically been the most popular teaching pedagogy utilized by collegiate faculty members in the United States. However, lecturing alone is not always the most successful approach to promote learning. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of incorporating active learning teaching techniques (facilitation) in a first-year undergraduate research methods course.
