The policy paper has outlined why it is important for the minister to consider in order to reinforce security in Australia. It contains updated information that needs to be considered by the minister before implementing foreign, economic, and developmental policies. The information has covered information on the economic status of Australia in the region, its military capacity to fight terrorism, and the developmental capabilities that make it targeted by terrorists.
This paper analyzes reasons why Australia has a lot of interest in its borders and how terrorism can impact its economic status and destabilize its security efforts. The south Pacific is viewed by Australia as the country’s ‘Near abroad’ consequently it is part of the country’s natural sphere of influence. This region is an area of key strategic importance to Australia that has a long-standing concern over military instability. Therefore, it remains Australia’s interests as well as the interests of Pacific Island neighbors to endeavor for an area that is economically practicable, politically stable as well as and area that is free from crime. To realize these interests’ financial costs and potential threats to Australia from the failing states will be immense, these include costs incurred in regard to fighting transitional crime and international terrorism. The rate of trafficking terrorists to the Australian border and terrorism attacks in Australia can be reduced if the bond and relationships with the neighboring country are intensified.
It is important for the minister to consider passing some laws and enacting policies to safeguard the country against terrorism. In comparison, Australia is the premier in the region and there are high probabilities that other countries will continuingly depend on Australia in one way or the other. Terrorists from the region fear Australian forces because of the military advances it has so far achieved. It has been shown to them, especially during the invasions in East Timor and in maritime surveillance. The main problem in the south pacific region is transnational terrorism because the intentions of terrorists are propelled and guided by wrong interpretations of the Islamic religion. Even though there have been bilateral agreements between Australia and the neighboring nations, the current tensions and chaos can not be overlooked. This is because the tensions can encourage enemies to repay through terrorism (Dudgeon, 2006). It should be technically realized that terrorist attacks that were carried out on Melbourne military spot signify that the attacks are intense and that they are targeting government offices, places, and military grounds. The bilateral agreements that exist between Australia and other neighboring countries have left many avenues open for terrorists. These avenues are more when there is chaos and tension all over the region. Camouflaging has had reputation of using chaos and tensions as a grace time to conduct their missions and attacks. Example of terrorist attacks that have been carried out in Australia since 1970 includes the 1972 terrorist attack on the Yugoslav Trade agency, the 1978 Hilton hotel in Sidney, the Assassination of the Turkish Consul in 1980, and the bombing of the Israel consul. The terrorist attack is expected because the prime minister of Australia recently warned that his country will not tolerate any other attack because the country has been under surge for a long time. His warning is considered a serious offense by the terrorists (Fingar, 2010).
