EMI had even attempted to obstruct the family from filing legal actions. It was the wish of Gaye that all the profits that the “Blurred Lines” had witnessed stripped of the administrative rights of the mega-hit handed to him. It is this step that prompted Robin Thick into a retaliatory action by filing a lawsuit in an attempt to protect his song and his public reputation (Gardner).Following the court papers, Gaye's family claims that the lawsuit was about reproducing Marvin Gaye’s classic pop song.

Gaye also insists that Thicke had confessed to telling Pharrell that one of his best songs was Marvin Gaye's Got to give it up and that they should reproduce it. As reported, the recording took place for an hour.Thicke is said to have mentioned the conversation during one of the interviews by GQ and Billboard (Makarechi). Before any careful investigation, this evidence alone was enough to win the case in favor of Gaye’s family. Thicke, on the contrary, declined the allegations saying he did not think of Marvin Gaye when writing the music.

The Gayes further add that the similarities seen in the two songs include the signature phrase, vocal hook, backup vocal hook, the keyboard, bass lines among others. These are more than the similarities that might result from trials to evoke an era of music. It is not only this song that the Gayes claim Thicke had stolen. Gaye’s ‘I want you’ is apparently similar to one of Thicke’s later work, ‘Make you love me’. It is said the song also bears a secret copyright claim by Thicke (Lewis).

One thing that makes this case more interesting is the allegations lodged against EMI, the producing company of the “Blurred Lines” which owns the full rights to the song. To add insult to injury, EMI and the Thicke crew are said to have issued a false narration to the press.
