Introduction: Employee hiring policies in the case of private security has become one important area, which most organizations are giving much importance. This is because the employee’s who are being hired for security activities, have to undergo stringent checks and interviews. The reason for this being that, the type of work they are to undertake in almost all organizations, needs them to be very competent in the security activities, for which they are being recruited. As a result of this, the organizations also understand the importance of the security personnel being employed in their organizations, since security is very vital for the smooth running of the organization. Indeed there had been many security lapses in the past due to incompetent security personnel and also lack of security persons in organisations. Not only such security incidents have resulted in huge losses for the organizations but also they lose the confidence in front of the public. Due to this very reason, almost all organizations of the world whether big or small, private or government, are taking up the process of recruiting competent security personnel very seriously. These set of policies that are being formulated by the organizations are backed up by a very good plan, which help the organizations to put these into action, in order to achieve the set of goals that the organizations is working towards. By adhering to such strict employee hiring policies during the recruitment of the security personnel, any organization can create a very good and competent security force, which becomes one of the strength for their organization. This also ensures the faith in the organization by the public, as well as for the employees and staff working within the organization. This also helps the organisation to provide excellent service to the public. The process of hiring employees for security activities becomes much easier for the organizations, by posting their needs to the private security agencies. Hence in today’s world most of the organizations, allot a certain amount of their funds for hiring private security. But it is noticed that, there are many factors that affect the hiring policies of organizations, when they are in need of security persons. These are the vital things, which contribute to the number and quality of the private security, that are to be hired by any organization. The factors are listed below: Environmental conditions: Organizations or companies that work under challenging and more risky environmental conditions, require highly competent and skilled type of security personnel, for ensuring the safety and security of their premises. The regions of high theft, burglary or high risk are the places, where such high quality security personnel are required. Indeed in such places the numbers of security personnel also have to be increased, considering the risk aspect that is being involved. Hence the private security agencies have to ensure that, they are able to provide the best and highly skilled personnel to such organizations. The organizations that operate in such regions have to make sure when they recruit security persons, to make them undergo various tests, which will thoroughly check their skills under such working conditions. Thus the incompetent and less skilled security persons can be filtered through this process of selection and the organisation can be very much confident that, they have selected and hired the best security personnel. (Newcomb) The factors of high inflation and high living costs also become a barrier to the hiring process. When there is high inflation that is prevailing in a particular region or when the living costs are practically very high, it makes the organizations to think twice for hiring private security. This is because it will cause a constraint to the organization in the form of salary, which is to be given to the hired private security persons, which bring extra pressure to the organisations funds. The number of security persons that are to be hired by the organization is also affected by the availability of funds. This is a defining factor that affects the private security agencies or companies that are located in such regions. (Newcomb) The legal factors also affect the private security firms, since the organizations are made to pay to the hired security persons the same kind of wages or salary, that are being paid to their own employees. This causes a big constraint to the organizations, since they have to abide by the same legal rules set by the government in that particular region, when hiring private security. (Ward 2005) These set of legal rules, that are laid down by the state and local administration makes it mandatory for the organizations and also the companies to comply strictly or else face legal action. Due to this many private security firms come under the government scanner and this limits their capability to provide the security persons to be hired by the various organizations of the world. The organization on their part are very much aware of the legal formalities and make sure that, they do not break the legal rules set by the government. (Ward 2005) Thus there are constraints like wages, illegal immigrants and many others, which have to be taken care by the organizations when hiring private security In today’s competent environment it is seen that, the private security who possess a very good set of mental and physical characteristics, are the people who stand a fair chance of being hired for security jobs. This is because these security people will be able to overcome the hurdles, which they face during the recruitment process because of the skills they possess. It makes them tough, competent and also confident to pass interviews and skill tests, which they undergo during the hiring process. (Willbanks) Their previous work experience with other organizations and companies, also play a very vital role in making them tough and gain a competitive edge over other private security persons, during an interview process. Persons with a good image and a very clean background are often the most sought after by the organizations as well as by private security firms. This is because people who are being hired for security jobs need to have very clean backgrounds. This becomes very much evident by doing a background verification procedure and helps the recruiters, to know the real background of the individuals who are to be hired for the security jobs. Many organisations do multiple background verification of the security persons, so as to ensure that they do not leave any loopholes during the hiring process. (Willbanks) The private firms also ensure to recruit the best personnel that are to be provided to the organizations. By doing so, they will be getting a clean image before the organizations and also will be ensuring that, their security provide the best and high quality service to the organizations, for which they are being hired. This will also keep them in their business of providing security persons to various organizations and increase their network. It is seen that most of the private security firms and organizations, use vetting process during the hiring and recruitment process of security personnel. Thus it is very clear that, the private security hiring becomes a very tough process due the environmental conditions that are prevailing in a particular region. (Newcomb) Budgetary policies The other factor that affects the employee hiring policies on private security is the budgetary constraints of the organizations. As a result, when an organization or a company does not have the sufficient amount of funds allocated in the organizations budget, then it would be unable to meet with the process of hiring private security. Thus the size and the economic strength of the organization have a very defining effect, when it comes to the hiring policies of private security persons. (Newcomb) An organization which is running successfully and is highly profitable has the freedom, to allocate more amounts towards the hiring of security personnel. This is the reason why some of the bigger organizations of the world allocate and tend to spend more amount of money in their budgets, for hiring competent and more number of security persons for their organizations security and well being. Thus smaller organizations tend to allocate lesser amount of funds in their yearly budgets, towards the hiring of security personnel. But since security is of vital importance currently for any organization it is seen that, many organizations are trying to allocate more funds for hiring the private security personnel. (Newcomb) Current economic conditions of the world like the recent economic crisis are also factors, which are forcing the organizations, to shrink the number of security personnel being hired. This adversely affects the private security agencies worldwide and is also threatening the hiring process of the security persons. Corporate Policies Corporate policies also have far reaching effect on the private security hiring policy. Hiring policies of corporate differ considerably across the world. As a result there are certain corporate, which depend on the recruitment channels for satisfying the requirements of hiring private security persons. These channels could be either referral channels, through which security persons could be hired or could be by means of placing advertisements in the newspapers and magazines. This makes it tough for the private security firms, since they have to compete with such channels, for keeping themselves abreast in their security business. (Newcomb) Conclusion: Thus it is seen that all these factors play an important role, when it comes to the question of employee hiring for private security purposes. As a result the private security firms and the persons provided by them are facing stiff competition in today’s world, since security is a prime concern for most of the organizations and the companies. Thus they have to upgrade their security persons and train them with the latest security methods and machines, so as keep abreast of the rest and provide the best kind of service to the organizations that they work for.
