This means the police had no right to arrest and detain Ayers for several days without probable cause.

If they had probable cause, they had the right to arrest him because he would be a great danger to the community around him. In addition, he could have been arrested so that the victim he attacked feel like justice has been done to them after they were attacked at knifepoint. Therefore, his arrest and prosecution would serve as a deterrent to other people with a similar intention to commit crimes.

The police would have been reluctant to arrest Ayers until they get enough evidence and facts linking Ayers to the crime. Additionally, the police would have considered the danger that Ayers could cause to the community if he was indeed involved in the crime. In turn, they arrested him so that the community could feel safe from criminal activities. Read More
