MENT OF PURPOSE I have always wanted to adopt a career which revolved around helping others. Throughout my life I watched my father, who is a lawyer, making efforts to bring a positive change in people’s lives and for me this was the perfect way to live. I have always been academically successful. I was among the high achievers in high school and graduate school. It is my firm belief that my academic qualifications will contribute to the success of my studies at the University. I graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor’s degree in Law from the Law Department of Thammasat University, a leading law school in Thailand.
The Thammasat University is highly reputable for its social science programs. Subsequently, I continued my education in the Thai Barrister Association. I was ranked at the 34th of my graduating class and became a Barrister-at-law in 2009. I had a very knowledgeable experience in SMU where I received my degree of Master of Law in Comparative and International Law (LL.M. degree for foreign law school graduates program) and achieved a GPA of 3.00. Studying subjects such as American Legal Perspective, Oil & Gas Contracts, Torts and Contract I came to identify my passion for this career.
Moreover my experience at SMU really improved my English language skills both in speaking and writing along with familiarizing me the American educational system. I am now fully aware of all the things I need to know as a citizen and a student in the U.S. The advanced studies at your distinguished university is a crucial part of my long-term goal toward becoming a professional prosecuting attorney expert at Tax law and an adjunct lecturer at law schools in Thailand, where I wish to continue living in the future.
By being a part of your prestigious institution, which is among the top 20 law schools of the country, I will be open to wider job prospects and my chances of being employed at a reputable firm will increase. I chose to study law because I wanted to become part of the community that helps maintain the law and order and work to provide justice. As I continue to study this subject I am further motivated to work for the betterment of the society. Nowadays there are growing demands for education and research on Tax law.
Most entrepreneurs employ both domestic and foreign consultants who keen on Tax law. Therefore, Thailand is confronting more complexly factual and legal challenges as well as additionally various approaches of tax evasion. To levy impartially on tax, it is imperative that we conduct deeper research on the topic in order to adjust ourselves to such difficulties. In this regard, I always believe a legal remedy well applicable for one country or legal system sometimes can be helpful for others. As a result, although my country adopts the civil law system, the comparative and international legal studies and research within the common law system like that of the United States will broaden my intellectual horizon.
This will help me learn how to tackle the gradually complex legal problems in my country. Furthermore, with the ASEAN Community expected to come into effect in 2015, Thai lawyers need to learn how to deal with the different legal systems among those countries. In this regard, I also believe this program will help me pave the way for understanding and analyzing the diversity of the legal systems among the ASEAN group, especially the countries adopting the common law system, such as Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei.
For these reasons, I believe the knowledge and insight, which I will gain from this program, would enable me to master legal research and writing skill. This will lay the sound foundation for my future practice and research on Tax law in Thailand. I am well aware that interpersonal skills and a good team spirit are the expected qualities possessed by legal personnel and I can say this with full confidence that I have both these traits. I Along with my educational background, my extra-curriculum activities and professional experience have helped me develop these characteristics.
The motto of the University where I graduated, “I love Thammasat University because Thammasat University teaches me to love my citizens”, always guides the course of action among the alumni. I was a volunteer in many social services organized by the Faculty of Law such as being a staff member of the legal service and information in the rural areas in Thailand in 2005-2007 and participating in the rural area development project in 2008. These rewarding experiences enabled me to understandthe needs of others and learn how to respond to those needs.
After my graduation, I continued to enhance my practice experience by taking internships at both the Office of Attorney General for four mouths and the Thai Consultant Law Office, a corporate and tax law office in Thailand, for six mouths. At the Office of Attorney, I was an assistant to the senior attorneys for investigating criminal actions and also conducted research on “How Tax Havens support Money Laundering?” On the other hand, at the Thai Consultant Law Office, I am responsible for drafting and revising of contracts and corporate documents.
Beside, I conducted research on “Effects of undertaking any corporate activities without directorial power in each case under Thai law.” After the internships, I decided to work in the area of conducting a case rather than consulting corporations. Besides, I am convinced that being a prosecuting attorney provides me with more time to be a writer and an adjunct lecturer. In 2011, I started working as a junior associate in PattanapongChamprechar Law Office, a local law office, in order to obtain more litigation experience.
Yale School of Law is one of the most prestigious institutes and the number one law school in the country. If I am provided with the valuable opportunity to attend your university, I will utilize my perseverance, abilities to contribute to university research and classes, create diversity as a Thai student. I hope to gain further in-depth knowledge in this subject and wish to use my skills to achieve my long term goal of obtaining a rewarding post in this profession. Thank you for providing me the opportunity to present my materials.
I look forward to get selected in this esteemed institution. Sincerely XYZ
