Effectiveness of Interpersonal Communication Effectiveness of Interpersonal Communication Introduction Communication can be defined as the exchange of information, ideas and messages by writing, speech and signal. People are very reliant on communication and its demise would evoke suffering and great misunderstanding in an entire organization or society (De Vries, Bakker-Pieper, Konings, & Schouten, 2013). However, when communication is timely and accurate, groups or organizations involved tend to be vibrant and accurate. (Hoffman, Glynn, Huge, Sietman, & Thomson, 2007). For organizations to perform best, senior leadership has to communicate clearly to workers on the key activities, development policies and issues to facilitate openness and transparency. For relationships to work out there has to be effective communication. Public speaking is process of communication to a large group involving a receiver sender and the message. During public speeches, we can make it best or badly and the outcome strongly affects the way the public thinks about us. Communication process can be effective or ineffective in regard to interpersonal communication. Interpersonal communication defines the communication process involving two or more parties at personal levels (Overbeck, Neale, & Govan, 2010). Intrapersonal communications is the interaction with oneself either loudly or without sound. The paper will purposely investigate on the incidences of interpersonal communication in addicted film and the effects brought by such form of communication. It is crucial to note that through improvement in speech and knowledge, we can develop good communication with other people or groups (De Vries, 2013). Interpersonal communication has various impacts to the way we live in dependence to how the message is delivered or received. Summary the “addicted” film. The story in the film is about a woman Zoe who is a successful businessperson. She is seemingly having an idyllic life with Jason the devoted husband. She has two adorable kids and a live-in mum Maria Howell. Zoe is dissatisfied with the life she lives and craves for more despite the lovely family, nice career and good life. She is looking for something more that is found from a new client Quinton Canosa, a Latin artist. On her next day visit, Canosa’s gives her a chance for a torrid affair having been attracted by his abs, thick accent and bedroom eyes. She further goes to nightclub where she met a biker Corey whom they had sex inside the bathroom in the club. It is evident that she becomes more unraveled having been nearly caught by the messenger pleasuring herself in the office. Zoe makes the three men meet at Canosa’s place to help her get over her problem, she ends up in a violent accident. Eventually her reason for addiction is learned, though having happened long ago. Body Interpersonal communication can be defined as the communication process involving two or more parties. To be a human makes us get involved at interpersonal level depending on different types of relationship (De Vries, 2013). In our day-to-day living, we experience relationships with friends, family, important people in our lives and people in our work place or learning institutions. Examining several evidences from the film will help me analyze the importance of interpersonal communication in day-to-day living (Hoffman, 2007). Having chosen the film Addicted, issues are presented at varying levels and require depth analysis. In the paper, the concept of interpersonal communication and how it was applied in the film either effectively or ineffectively in respect to the short and long-term to relationships (Honeycutt, Vickery & Hatcher, 2015). The film addicted focuses on Zoe who is a sex addict, she fights with her problem despite being difficult to control her situation. She accepts her condition and takes a step to visit a therapist who also at the end helps her identify where the problem had originated. In this film, instances of interpersonal and intrapersonal communication are evident in various situations involving different actors and actresses. Zoe is centered in a marriage and after being unfaithful, she fears of losing her marriage if Jason the husband finds out. Despite her fear, she still risks to go out in nightclub and have sex with the biker. These incidents represents concept of depenetration between the couple that makes it hard for the two to communicate effectively (Floyd, 2014). Explanation is given to deterioration as a stage whereby relationship seems to be experiencing weakening of bond between the parties causing regression. Interpersonal communication inform of dyadic communication is seen at the beginning of the film whereby Zoe visits a therapist and states she has everything in her marriage yet not satisfied conjugally presenting her active listening as well. She goes to the therapist without consulting her husband Jason or Brina the assistant who is so committed to the business. The application of deterioration was well in this film, its much evident in the above incidences and the entire film. Not only does it show that there is a problem in the marriage but also Zoe is distressed about her family as a whole and this makes her visit the therapist who affirms her on the situation at hand. Jason the husband also realizes that there is a problem with Zoe and he gives her a chance to explain herself. Affinity seeking strategy comes about after disagreeing with the wife he says, “I need my wife back” in her presence for Zoe to know there is really a problem. Irrespective of the couple’s condition, the son is also affected and the in-living mother. This presents second application of interpersonal communication. The son because of her mother’s presence during the soccer game gets disappointed and gives a long face when the mother comes, showing effective display by frowning and leaving in disgust. The in-staying mother also is restless with Zoe’s conditions of trying to hide from reality and acting fishy especially when she was called while at the nightclub. The children have limited time with their mother and the father is the one who took them out while Zoe was at the painter’s house having sex and being painted nude. Brina is also affected, she strikes a deal for Zoe to meet the rich businessperson and yet she is at Canosa’s house during the time scheduled for them to meet. The man gets irritated and leaves without making the deal that would have changed their lives as Brina said. Altercasting is evident when she tells Zoe to put herself in her situation and how she would feel. The short-term effects of this relationship deterioration are that the son is assertive and gets irritated by starting being unfriendly to his mum. She also loses a great business deal that could have brought change to her company. Brina is much disappointed in her friend who is the manager and starts avoiding her creating unhealthy interpersonal communication. The long-term consequences in the weakening of interpersonal relations are that Zoe should find a way of rescuing her marriage despite being a sex addict. Another instance is if the son will later understand her mother and forgive her of having neglected them at family times. Blended emotion builds up through the son who walks away on his mum and at the same time worried of her situation at “work”. Attraction to Zoe brings about making her come back repeatedly hence improving communication between them making Canosa propose for a marriage. The biker also gets too much into Zoe and she thinks he would make something out of their intimacy relationship due to her dyadic effect on their first meet at the nightclub. It is the concern of these characters to determine whether their actions would be positive or negative to those whom they relate with in one way or the other. This is also true in day-to-day real life relationships. (Hoffman, 2007) When someone or a group gets to feel unfulfilled by a given relationship, they tend to withdraw from one another and the relationship gets to fall apart in regard to time. The other concept of interpersonal communication in relationship is that of repairing relationships. Here we have two components including interpersonal and intrapersonal repair of relationships (Santos & Rozier, 2007). Intrapersonal relationship involves analyzing what went wrong and search for ways of resolving the problem. However, interpersonal repair involves talking about the problem as presented in the relationship, the recommended corrections expected and maybe what one would be willing to do and that which the other party is expected to do. The film focuses on repairing the relationship of the major actor and actress (Floyd, 2014). Zoe after the fatal accident gets to heal and the husband is much concerned about her healthy living. He takes the flier to accept the invitation to attend the meeting of sex addicts who are trying to be reformed. Zoe admits her love for the one she calls her soul mate, and Jason gives her a big hug in the meeting. The film finishes with us not knowing if the problem was really solved or not. Zoe also gives much attention to her son who developed a negative attitude towards her when he learnt of the mothers not being concerned with them. Zoe gets to solve the relationship between her and the son hence getting a big hug. This concept is also presented in the case of Zoe trying to make things right between the men within her life both having behavioral synchrony. She lives the phone intentionally for the husband to follow her and at the same time, the biker was with her showing how this displays a high level of creative thinking. This turns into a serious fight between Canosa the artist and the biker whom she met in the nightclub. The secret lovers fight and the biker lose consciousness, at the same time Canosa still wants to take Zoe in bed. Fortunately, Jason gets into artist’s place to save his wife. He learns the reality and feels so wasted with their relationship. Zoe due to denial exposes herself to a fatal accident. Denial makes it difficult for Zoe to achieve the goal of making things right with Jason. (Floyd, 2014). The concept of allness is portrayed by Canosa who still insist to take Zoe to bed despite having been aware of her affair with the biker. Zoe is under fear and she tries to hide behind a drawing of a woman who seemed to be very scared. Artificial communication comes in with the Zoe’s fear in regard to the scared woman in the drawing. Subsequently, argumentativeness is represented by the couple on their way from the workshop before the fatal accident. Argumentative communication can therefore lead to serious consequences to the offended party. Zoe exposes herself to an accident at will which could have led to death. Conversation management and turns are achieved in the film stage by stage. As a result, Zoe is like gaining back her marriage. The children are also now happy with her especially the son. On the other hand, the long-term consequence of repairing relationship is that Zoe learns to say the truth despite the expected harsh consequences. The family is now happy including the in-staying mother. The condition of ageism is corrected at the end of the film, the son is very happy with the mother unlike at the beginning when he was angry about her. Zoe neglected her son making communication between them limited because of the lies she told her son. In daily living it applies when parents take actions irrespective of their children feelings (Santos, 2007). Conclusion At the end of the film, Zoe seems to be happy. The kids are presented finally to giving her attention showing love. In the film, we see effects of interpersonal relation on how it can help identify, discuss and repair a situation in relationships. Through the different characters in the film, different situations are presented which in real life situation do happen in different determinants of interpersonal communication. The film is a real art that tried to picture real life situation (Floyd, 2014). Subsequently, keen viewers can use the strategies involved in communication process as presented in the film to better their interpersonal communication in regard different relationships. At the end, we can depict that arguments and unhealthy communication can cause serious consequences and should be avoided.
