Objective This presentation aims to present the different forms of non-verbal communication and how they are applied in our group Types of non-verbalcommunication
Despite verbal communication being the most common mode of communication, non-verbal communication is also used in various occasions. Nonverbal communication is mostly done using various organs of the human body and its interpreatation varies depending on culture and religion among other factors. Some of the most commonly used modes of non-verbal communication include Roxemics, Kinesics, Haptics, Chronemics, Paralanguage, Oculesics, Olfactics and chromatics.
Proxemics
Proxemics revolves around how we use the space around us in non-verbal communication. This is because the usage of the space can make us more relaxed or uncomfortable. In this regard, there are two flavors of Proxemics namely:
a) Physical Territory
b) Personal territory
In the physical territory, the color around us usually plays a significant part in the success of the activities we undertake. For example, bright colors are observed to be appealing for activities not requiring too much attention and taking less time for completion; for example in some fast food joints. On the other hand, dull colors are very convenient for detailed assignment because the concentration level is improved and one feels more relaxed.
Personal territory is presented in four areas namely
Public space-this is mostly applicable in public address as the distance between the parties involved is relatively large
Social space-This is applicable mostly when dealing with strangers with the separation distance being relatively large but smaller than in public space
Personal space-This is mostly applicable between friends and the separation distance is less than in social space; usually 2-4 feets
Intimate space- This takes the shortest separation distance with the possibility of the use of touch, and is mostly used by friends
Despite there being defined separation distance between the parties involved, fluctuation may be evident due to the variance in culture among different groups
In our group, personal space, personal space and intimate space are mostly applicable since the separation distance ranges from one foot to four foots
Due to the diversity in culture, separation distance may fluctuate, an aspect taken into consideration in our group.
Kinesic
Kinesic is a non-verbal communication mode presented through body movement, and is divided into the following aspects
Body posture- the positioning of the body differs with open body taking considerable space indicating comfort and settled mind, while a closed in body indicates inferiority and discomfort. In this case, the body posture of each of the group member communicates something
Gestures- This is presented through body and arm movement and can be classified into five types namely:
a) Emblems: Straight word substitution.
b) Illustrators: this is done by drawing the shapes of the items being described
c) Affect displays: this refers to presentation of feelings.
d) Regulators: This is used to control the conversations between the parties involved.
e) Adaptors: This is mostly applicable in relieving tension.
Facial Signals- By looking on one’s face without uttering a word, communication is made. This is expressed through eye contact and subsequent breaks. Other important aspects of facial signals include forehead, eyebrows and presentation of the mouth, such as smiling
Haptic
Haptic communication is executed through touching and can be interpreted differently depending on the parties involved. In our group, the most common modes of Haptic communication presented include
a) Greeting-This is the most common communication mode with the duration of the greeting being interpreted differently. It usually shows a sense of affection and domination
b) Guiding-When physically moving, or maybe searching for something different, touch helps a great deal in guiding
c) Gaining attention- When one is distracted by another thing, a touch is usually very useful in gaining his/her attention
d) Sympathy-when one’s mind seem not being in comfort, a touch is usually appreciated by the victim and communicates a sense of appreciation
e) Friendship-Touch is perceived to present closeness between the parties involved
Additionally, depending on the situation at hand, touch can be used for arousal, punishment such as slapping or for professional work mostly in the medical field
Chronemics
Chronemics communication is based on how we utilize time and our reaction to it. In this case, depending on the character, schedule and environment, people respond differently to time; some would accept delays while others demand punctuality. Additionally, people respond differently depending on the nature of a speech with the time they are willing to listen varying.
The underlying principles in Chronemics communication includes
a. Time perception
b. Time structure
c. Reaction to time
d. Frequency of action
Due to the diversity in time perception, two groups of persons namely monochronic and polychronic arise. Monochronic persons are time conscious while polychronic persons seems relaxed and can break commitments at any time.
In this regard, our group considers time as an important commodity and punctuality is adhered to ensure that all activities are completed as scheduled
Paralanguage/Vocalic
Paralanguage communication is a non-verbal communication method characterized by different attributes of voice.
This non-verbal communication method is characterized by pitch, tone volume, tempo, rhythm, articulation, rhythm, nasality and accent; it revolves around the study of the various attributes of voice. As such, the cultural background and environment of a person greatly influences the communication
The main aspects of paralanguage/vocalics communication, which are analyzed include
Voice set- various factors such as mood , sexuality and age have direct impact on voice set
Voice qualities-these factors vary among different persons and are evident in the diversity in volume and articulation among others
Vocalization- this is effectively outlined by characterizers, qualifiers and segregators
In this regard, a clear understanding of this method ensures good communication between the group members
Oculesics
Oculesic is a common non-verbal communication presented through the eyes. This revolves around eye gaze and enlargement of the pupil when one is faced by different situation People use eyes to communicate various information ranging from social to emotional feelings. Despite this, the interpretation of various eye movements differ among people due to diversity in religion and culture; for example, in some cultures, the young should never face the old while conversing as a show of respect. In our group, consistence eye contact is emphasized as it indicates interest and commitment in everything we undertake. When conversing, avoidance of eye contact usually indicates dishonest between the members of the group
Eye contact presents a better avenue for presenting emotional and social information to other persons within a group
Olfactics
Olfactics Communication refers to the use of smell to communicate; human beings have the capacity to detect different scents and also do have glads that produce scents. Due to the diversity in human race ethnicity, different scents are acceptable by different groups of people. The effectiveness of olfactics is directly proportional to separation distance between the parties involved. Therefore, in ensuring that best results are achieved in any group, generally accepted scent should be present.
Chromatics
This form of communication revolves around colors, used and worn during various occasions; different colors have different meanings such as happiness or mourning.
The preference of the color differ with culture and religion, depending on the interpretation with some colors having globally accepted interpretations
A clear understanding of the interpretation of different colors among different cultures is essential in ensuring that the best results are achieved in any undertaking
