Weekly Reading Journal: “Human race 'will be extinct within 100 years”Main Idea and Rationale for it Being the Main IdeaIn the article entitled “Human race 'will be extinct within 100 years, claims leading scientist” written by Niall Firth and published online in the Mail Online, the author presented relevant issues pertaining to the forecasted alleged extinction of the human race by scientist, Frank Fenner, in a specifically identified time frame: within a century[Fir10]. As explicitly stated, Fenner “predicted that the human race will be extinct within the next 100 years.

He has claimed that the human race will be unable to survive a population explosion and 'unbridled consumption” [Fir10]. This is the main idea that the article presented since all supporting arguments aimed to validate the contentions through logical reasoning; establishing the credibility of the scientist who made the bold, yet pessimistic claim; and through the provision of factors that could evidently be contributory to validating the claim.Whether One Agrees or Disagrees with the Author’s Perspective and WHYOne could be led to agree with the author’s revelation from asserting the claim of Fenner that the human race could possibly be extinct within 100 years.

However, one disagrees to it for the reason that although the factors leading to extinction could indeed be currently existing, one firmly believes that as humans who are given the intellectual capability to discover, think, research, and address pertinent dilemmas within our control, we could still have the ability to prevent our own alleged extinction. First, Frank Fenner’s credibility, through remarkable as having reportedly accomplished the following: eradicated the variola virus that led to smallpox, having written or co-authoring a total number of 22 books, assisting in controlling myxomatosis problems in Australia’s rabbits, his expertise remains in the microbiology field of endeavor.

He has actually identified that the strongest impetus for extinction include climate change, population explosion and uncontrolled consumption. From the enumeration of these variables, it could be noted that contemporary international environmental organizations and policymakers of countries around the world have already focused on addressing climate change through different measures. The other two variables: population and consumption are still controllable. It could take a humongous effort and a collaboration from countries on a global scale to universally address population and consumption.

One firmly asserts that these factors could still be addressed with proper dissemination of public information and enhancing the awareness of the devastating imminence of extinction if left unabated. As such, humans are normally designed to focus on preservation of life. With technological advancement, more research on ecological sustainability, and ways to address population increase and alleged uncontrollable consumption, humans still have the time and the resources to focus on factors that are within our control.

Therefore, people would do everything possible and make the necessary sacrifices to ensure that life continues beyond the 100 year predicted period.Work CitedFir10: , (Firth), Fir10: , (Firth pars. 2 & 3),
