The Godfather The internet has it that the movie, The Godfather, is one that features in the list of top ten movies. It is exalted in the number one position among the various gangster genre epics. Francis Coppola’s drama epic is one of the most revered trilogies in the history of cinematic productions. Since the release of the movie in 1972, The Godfather has become a much desired fixture in popular culture and has continued to grow both in the purchase value and watchers. The movie was produced by Albert S.
Ruddy under a screen play by Coppola and is based on the novel by Mario Puzo called The Godfather. Composed of thirteen main characters, the cast is well allocated and plays a crucial role in the formation of the melodrama. The Hollywood movie was produced mainly in New York with some setting taken in parts of Sicily and Las Vegas. The main genre displayed by the actors is actually action and some components of drama and due to the iconic sections; it forms a benchmark for all other movies of the same genre such as Goodfellas and Scarface.
The movie is one of the revered and most parodied with nods appearing on scenes such as the head of the horse in the bed. The cast is composed of Marlon Brando as Don Vito Corleone, Al Pacino as Michael, James Caan as Santino, Richard S. Castellano as Clemenza, John Cazale as Fredo, Diane Keaton as Kay Adams, Al Lettieri as Sollozzo, Gianni Russo as Carlo Rizzi, Talia Shire as Connie, and Abe Vigoda as Salvatore Tessio among others (Turner 43). The drama and action movies runs for close to three hours and has received honors in the Oscar awards with the best picture, best actor as Marlon Brando and best adapted screen play.
Others include seven more nominations by Oscars in previous years. Gangster movie forms among the oldest movies in film genre productions and thus have an influential force in the industry. The Godfather rates close to more than three hundred watchers and is still one of the most sought after action epics. The close to three hour gangster movie has a well-planned plot which begins with a family celebration, a mode that is repeated in the rest of the trilogy (Turner 57). The main theme; family, is used in the story.
This is probably because it is the prevailing unit that forms a society. Like it or not, the family forms the attitude and behaviors that result to a character. This basic unit is essential, and the use of a ceremony depicts the emotions that are portrayed in the movie. A wedding ceremony is most likely to draw the attention of the spectators and creates the interest to know who is getting married, what the after effect are and what happens in the next scene (Puzo 31). The scene has been used effectively to capture the mind of the viewers in a way that has not been seen in other such epics.
The plot of the trilogy is quite effective and well-drawn. The story begins with an attempt to assassinated Don Vito who owns an empire and is influential in the political scene by a rival family. This is because he has revoked an invitation to take part in an illegal business in narcotics trade. After the assassination, the ruler is out temporarily, and the empire needs to be managed. It is thus upon the sons to ensure that the clan is run. This includes Sonny who is quite hot tempered, a mild Fredo, an adopted son of Irish ancestry called Tom Hagen and Michael who is the only fortunate one to gain college education.
The much independent Michael wants nothing to do with the family business initially but eventually comes through as the sole successor and heir after having murdered his father would be murderer and corrupt officer of the police. In this scene commonly referred to as the sollozzo scene, the true murderous nature of Michael is depicted (Puzo 62). Afterwards, he goes on exile and flees to Sicily where the more romantic part of the movie is shown. Coupled with the melodious portions of Nino Rota’s music, the scene currently taken in autumn induces a different feeling of calmness to the audience.
The movie in general is captivating catching themes of greed, family, betrayal and crime effectively. It is a creation of the current lifestyle especially in the aristocrats and those slowly ascending thrones of power. It shows how family can be lured into hatred and friends into unhealthy completion and betrayal. The Godfather is actually a learning adventure to the people who lack a sense of direction and path to their true destiny. It can be used in settings as such to motivate the youth to set the rights paths to follow and take responsibilities and duty wisely.
I not only recommend it but also find the thriller enchanting. Works Cited Puzo, Mario. The Godfather. Michigan: Random House, 2009. Turner, Graeme. The Film Cultures Reader. New York: Routledge, 2002.
