How to Use Facebook How to use Facebook Chances are high that most of the people you know use Facebook, with over 1 billion users. Facebook is regarded as one of the most crucial facets many people’s social life, from chatting with friends and sharing your opinion, to creating events and making new friends (Harri, 2104). Gearlog (2010) noted that Facebook has played a big part in promoting efforts to attain a clean energy future. This has enabled millions of persons from various backgrounds to easily share, connect and unleash innovative environmental initiatives across the world. It has also enabled people to easily remember birthdays and play games such as FarmVille. 1. Building your profile You first need to fill out a sign up form which needs you to enter your first and last name, address, birthday, and finally, your gender. You would be required to come up with password and an email which you will use to log in into the Facebook account. Click the sign up form that will require you to enter the captcha phrase just to ensure you are human. After clicking the sign up button, the process of creating the account starts. Facebook would then suggest the individuals to add as friends. If you do not recognize any of them, you can skip to the next process. Entering your education and current employer is optional but useful in assisting others to connect with you (Harri, 2104). Then you can add a photo of your self. Verify your account: once you have completed the process of creating the account, you will see a message on the newsfeed at the top of the page notifying you that an activation email has been sent to the address you signed up with. Once the account is verified, you can commence making use of Facebook. By clicking the ‘Edit Profile link which underneath your picture in the top-left corner, you can add information your Facebook account such as relationship status, hometown, current home, favorite quotes, religious views, and political views. 2. Setting your privacy options Click the gear icon in the top-right corner. Click the “Privacy Settings” option to open the privacy settings and tools page. Next, is reviewing your available options. This menu permits you to modify the basic privacy settings that affect your whole Facebook account. Customizing your settings can assist you keep personal information private. This is because as a result of the social nature of Facebook, persons have a tendency of posting a lot of personal information (Harri, 2104). 3. Add friends and family Enter the name, phone number of the person into the search bar and search. Click the results form the list and then click the button ‘Add friend.’ When the other person accepts the friend request, you automatically become friends (Harri, 2104). Respond to friend requests. Since you have started to use Facebook, you will also receive friend requests from other users and you can accept or decline the request. Next to each request you will observe the number of mutual friends you have with that particular individual. You can also unfriend persons you do not want to connect with. 4. Making and sharing posts To make a post, you need to click at the top of your newsfeed, type what you intend to share, and when you are ready to post, click the blue Post button (Harri, 2104). You can also comment on a friend’s post by typing in the field written “Write a comment” 5. Like pages You can also like pages on Facebook. Begin by searching for musicians, artists, businesses, famous people, organizations, and more using the Facebook search bar. Then you can “Like” these pages in order to receive updates on your newsfeed when they are posted (Harri, 2104). 6. Upload videos and photos Click on the “Add photos/videos” button. It will show upload photos/videos and create a photo album. A file browser will be opened where you can browse for videos and photos on your mobile phone or computer. The photos or videos will be posted on your timeline (Harri, 2014). Delete photos: click the pencil button on the photo’s preview in the top-right corner. This will open a menu and then click the “Delete this photo” option. 7. Creating events and attending events To create an event go to the events page and click the “+Create Event” button. Then set a name for the event, its details and setting the date for the event. You can also specify a start and end time for the event (Harri, 2104). Set the privacy setting: you can select whether the event will be private or public by clicking on the respective buttons (Harri, 2104). 8. Chatting with friends on Facebook Just click on the friend’s name you intend to chat with. This will open a small chat window, and you can begin sending messages even if he/she is offline (Harri, 2104). To review you past chats click ‘Messaging’ icon at the top of the Facebook page. Then click “See all” at the bottom of the list, which will open your inbox. You can scroll through all of your past messages (Harri, 2104). 9. Using Facebook for business and other uses Create a Facebook account as outlined earlier. Get more fans to join your Facebook page which you can use to advertise your business or organization to the millions of Facebook users who are also potential customers (Harri, 2104). If you are using a blog service, you can add a Facebook like button to your blog. This will assists you to drive more traffic to your blog. 10. Facebook Help Incase of any need for assistance, click the newsfeed menu and proceed to the Facebook help icon. There you can report your problem and get quick response form the administrator.
