The application can also be logged in through their website anywhere in the world. Skype is currently available in 28 languages and has a global user dictionary of users. The telephone service to other Skype users on the internet as well as calls to free of charge landline/mobile numbers is free whereas calls to other numbers on landlines and mobile phone networks incur a charge.
SkypeIn allows users of Skype to receive calls from non-Skype users on phone networks. In some countries, local numbers are available for Skype users so that the phone users who make calls to them get charged at local call rates. These countries include Australia, Brazil, Chile, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Poland, Romania, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and the United States. Other telephony features include voicemail and call forwarding.
Video calling or videoconferencing allows many users to communicate with another whilst seeing each other at the same time. This feature was introduced in January 2006 for Macintosh and Windows users, and in March 2008 for Linux users. Recent versions offer high quality and special features such as full screen and screen-in-screen mode.
In 2007, Skype launched its own mobile phone by the name of Skypephone, This runs the Brew operating system. Since April 2008, Skype software is has been made available to run on a range of other mobile phones[2] running Windows Mobile, certain PC tablets, and the PlayStation Portable too. Developments are in progress for versions of the Skype software to run on the Symbian mobile phone operating system also. Companies other than Skype have produced special Skype phones that connect using WiFi. And, some developers such as Nimbuzz have enabled Skype to be used alongside other VoIP/IM clients under the Symbian and Java environments.
Encryption is a built-in feature of Skype. According to Skype, well-established encryption techniques are used, although the methods are non-proprietary.
