Freedom of Thought Freedom is an important aspect of human beings today. This is evident from the ancient times during the colonization of various countries (Cameron-Dove 10). Our fore fathers fought hard to retrieve the freedom that our country deserved. Freedom is important since it entails independence of individuals doing whatever they deem fit as long as it falls within the walls of the societal norms of the society in question. The main idea in this interpretive analysis is the freedom of thought which is visible in both the lazy little Zulu and the Mahfouz head Marquez’s the answer is no. To understand this theme of freedom of thought, it is important to understand what freedom of thought entails. It entails the freedom that an individual has to consider a fact, thought or viewpoint irrespective of the view points of other people in the society. It is important in the democratic constitutions today which protect this freedom. However, it is difficult to suppress this freedom of thought since it is impossible to know what an individual is thinking about unless they choose to disclose it. Despite this, freedom of thought is limited via censorship, burning of books and propaganda discouraging it altogether. If individuals hold their freedom of thought, then it becomes easy for them to express themselves whenever they find others taking advantage of them in anyway. In Mahfouz, Head, Marquez, there is this story on the answer is no. there is this teacher who had been abused as a small girl by her mathematics tutor that her father had designated for her. This tutor was over twenty five years older than her and he promised to come back and marry her when she became of age. True to his words, he had kept his promise. He came back and proposed to her but she rejected. She was now more knowledgeable than she was years ago when the teacher abused her. She wondered whether the man was after her money now than she was successful and independent. The mere feeling of a man almost her father’s age abusing an innocent little girl disgusted her. She could not marry her despite her mother’s advises that fell on a deaf ear. More suitors came forward for her hand but she kept on rejecting them. This is one story that shows the aspect of independence of thought. Now that she had come of age, the teacher could now make her own decisions. She could not allow her weaknesses define her. She fought hard to ensure that she capitalized on her strengths and worked on her weaknesses to ensure that she became an independent young lady. She was successful and had money thus many men came forward for her hand. As it is norm, many young ladies of her caliber could take the opportunity gladly and accept one of the numerous marriage proposals. However, this young lady was not like the rest. She had her independent mindset which governed the decisions she made about her life. Despite age not being by her side, nothing seemed to come between her and her freedom of thought. She concentrated on what she felt was right at the time. After succeeding, many young ladies next option is marriage. However, this young lady did not go with the mindset of others in her age bracket. She concentrated on keeping herself busy even during her spare time. Thus, she had no time for marriage at that time. In the lazy little Zulu, Chaka was considered lazy by other people since he did not go by the norm of his age mates. Most of the boys in his village enjoyed playing games and working in sweet potato patches, digging and planting. However, this was not Chaka’s norm. He enjoyed going into the woods and observing the wild animals and what nature had to offer. Due to this, many people thought that he was lazy. What they did not know was that Chaka had his own representation of hard work in his mind. This was evident when his mother fell sick and he decided to sick the help of a doctor who could not help because Chaka did not have a shilling. He came up with ways of looking for a shilling by gathering small tea seeds for an English man. He gathered the seeds faster than warriors could which startled even the Englishman himself. Though the doctor failed to cure his mother, the Englishman was baffled by Chaka’s ability to gather the tiny tea seeds within such a short time that he decided to help diagnose his mother and she was cured the following morning. It is evident that Chaka’s own freedom of thought contributed to his mother getting the cure she deserved. Had Chaka done the routine of the fellow boys of his age bracket in the village, then he would not have known where to gather the tiny tea seeds within such a short period of time. As such, his mother could have succumbed form his illness living him with no one to take care of him since he had no brothers or sisters. Freedom of thought equips individuals with high level of wisdom as evident in this Chaka’s story. This is because Chaka was wise enough not to indicate to the Englishman how he had managed to find the tiny tea seeds within such a short period of time. The reason is that the Englishman could have overturned the anthills leaving the villagers with no source of income when need be. It is therefore, evident that freedom of thought enables an individual to be wise and independent. The young lady in the Mahfouz, Head, Marquez possessed the freedom of thought. That she was wise enough not to get married to a man who stole her innocence since she could have lead a very miserable life. Moreover, she did not know his motive for wanting to marry her. On the other hand, Chaka was wise enough to know how to save his mother by collecting the tiny tea seeds within a short period of time than even the village warriors could manage. His thought of spending time in the woods saved the day. Thus, it is important for individual to harbor their freedom of thought and always put it to use when need be. Works Cited Cameron-Dove, Zoe.
