How IT Impacts your career/major ..."General Business Introduction Information technology is a combination of several brilliant inventions of the twentieth century in the electronics and communication. However, during a very short period of time, it has actually acquired a significant place in nearly all the human life aspects and specifically in the sector of education. Many countries such as the United States and India have taken bold steps in the adapting and absorption of the developments in technology by creating national task force to deal with the issue (Ante, Borrus and Hof, 2001). Many countries have been overtaken by the revolution of information due to several centuries of colonization, which made them miss the benefits of industrial revolution. Similarly, as a result of globalization opening the door wide to the foreign influence, governments have decided to take all the steps in ensuring that their countries become IT superpowers for the purposes of enabling national and individual growth. The IT programs involve all aspects of life such as commerce and industry, insurance and banking, communication, finance, development of human resources, defense and media. The steps taken enables the provision of effective education in nearly all disciplines and specifically for the schools of business, to apply novel technologies in making sure there is better management of education (Brown, and Duguid, 2000). The rising demand for management education, and change in the nature of industry and business within the newly established environment of market that is borderless, as well as the development of information technology offer an opportunity of changing the curricular and the systems of delivery of management education to give the prospective managers an advantage to face the challenge in the competitive setting successfully. Consequently, management education and Information Technology has developed a mutual relationship that is supportive or each other in the achievement of excellence. This paper is going to examine and describe how Information technology has impacted my career as a management student. Impact of IT on delivery system In many schools of business, the delivery of information and knowledge is through teaching aids such as slide projector, LCD projector and an overhead projector. Nevertheless, in distance learning mode, there are different tools such as audio-visual tapes, radio broadcast, and telecast via television, teleconferencing via satellite, CD-ROMs and floppy diskettes and networking through the Internet, that are used or even might be used in an extensive way in the impartation of management education in distant areas also. With access to the internet, as students, we are in a position of reaching an unlimited pool of ideas, via the Web television, whereas working at our places or home. The homes will then come to harbor the e-virtual classroom. It is also easy for the tutors and functional specialties to interact directly with a large number of students, with the aid of the broadcast television (Brown, and Duguid, 2000). ′ CD-ROMs running on a multimedia PC are very important as huge amount of information, documents, data and figures are kept within them together with the video and audio effect. In addition, internet communications helps in the impartation of ideas as classroom settings might be established at home as long as there is access to the mail and web surfing on the World Wide Web that is available everywhere due to the web TV launch. Computers play a critical role in the creation of learning material. It is easy to collect symbolic advantage through multimedia by the integrating different kinds of information like animations graphics, clip art, live and voice integration that make it easy for the delivery (Bailey, Jenkins and Oliver, 2002). Digital multimedia has elevated the functionality to the delivery of information and education. This information’s consumers have a choice of calling for information they require. It is also easy for students to view a selected program at their convenience. Multimedia computer enables the training of management education in a face-to-face situation (Bailey, Jenkins and Oliver, 2002). As students in the management discipline, we come with mature personality. Learning that is computer based offer us an chance for self-growth instead of being taught, which encourages us as we make a review of our accomplishments in the process of learning. On the other hand, instructors are also able to focus on activities that are related to research and development as they are given a break from the usual monotonous work like practice, tasking and information sharing. The IT tools and equipment have quite some advantages in comparison with the traditional mode of sharing information (Bailey, Jenkins and Oliver, 2002). This brings about the need for computer that is not only significant in the sharing or knowledge and information, but also absorbs the skills needed in a potential manager like behavioral, conceptual, administrative and analytical. Many software have been developed, which help in the development of the ability to apply knowledge in the actual life and theoretical situations. Some literature on management has been published with the CD ROM, which offer visual effect to the published or printed material (Bahnot, & Fallows, 2002). Impact on aiding research One of the major areas that Information technology has had great impact on my educational life as a management student is research. Traditionally, before the arrival of the internet, students used to go to the libraries in search of information (Bailey, Jenkins and Oliver, 2002). The challenge of this kind of research is because it is cumbersome to looks for books in the libraries, as the books are usually many or someone might be using a book that one wanted to use. With the internet, I can just search for the information that I want and I get the answer that I want. Search engines such as Google and Yahoo have millions of answer to a single question. This means that it is possible to get different angles of tackling a question, thus making the learning process a comprehensive one (Brunnel, 2000). In addition, the saving of information obtained is easy as compared to the traditional ways. Initially, note could be taken down on books for future reference or revision. However, at present, I am able to search information about management and store in in a flash disk, memory card or even CD. This has greatly made it easy for me in my studies and I hope to finish as a competent prospective manager. Conclusion IT could not have come at a better time than this as it has really revolutionized the study of management and even business in general. Business schools are not producing qualified and competent managers that rally perform well in the job market due to information technology. In my studies as a management student, it goes without saying that I would have found it difficult to study if there were no computers and the internet. This is because it has enabled me to do all my researcher faster and successfully. The internet also enables me to do my assignments faster because I just search using the key world on the search engines and the details or information that I am looking for just come. Therefore, it is true that Information technology has greatly impacted my life as a management students together with my fellows as it has made life easily and I believe it will still help me until I complete the course successfully.
