Patriarchy system represents laws and norms codified playing significant roles in the relationship between men and women. This is a formal structure of relations as well as the quality of interpersonal relations between the sexes (Crompton, R. 1987:104). Patriarchal power in profession contributes to men controlling professional closure limiting women opportunities and entry into certain professions (Witz, 1992). Despite this assertion, patriarchy may also strengthen women career progression through motivation to becoming independent (Komori, 2008).

The concept of masculinity and feminity is common in audit firms, where masculinity traits are common in their organizational culture thus top positions are highly political. Networking, careerism, and competition characterize these traits. The implication of these is that employees have feminine traits thus excluded and perceived incompatible in the workplace (Hines, 1992; Kirkham, 1992; Kirkham and Loft, 1993). There is still patriarchal relations in the workplace despite gender-balanced recruitment policies, merit consideration and promotion assessment criterion put in place (Walby, 1997, p. 41). While women struggle against patriarchal relations, patriarchs employ strategies to counter them each day in the workplace (Witz 1992).

Literature review on women against patriarchs in the workplace indicates that competent women are posing a threat to their male counterparts. With the existence of patriarch strategies, women have been able to counter patriarchy effectively. French & Meredith provides that patriarchy is the major cause of women disadvantages in the workplace (French & Meredith, 1994: 239).It is irrational to discriminate women who have attained CPAs credentials under capitalism. With the interest group pressure and sanctions against any discrimination in the workplace, patriarchy has become less efficient and less financially lucrative to employers.

Patriarchy still exists in workplaces where the number of women is less despite sanction existence. Patriarchal practices are no longer viable when workers demand out shadows supply (French & Meredith, 1994).5.1 Family background and parental attitudes to independenceWomen decision in pursuing an accounting career is influenced by a number of factors. According to Komori study on women accounting professionals, the factors he points out include parental attitude on independence and family background (Komori, 2008).

Studies also show that some parents encourage their daughters to pursue independent freedom others restricted their daughters to lives within private patriarchy. The barriers and conflicts created by parents further strengthen the desire for their daughters to gain independence (see Walker, 1998, 2003). This shows the potential effects and implications of women gender barriers and the provision that as patriarchy perceived as to hinder career progress for women, it is as well essential in strengthening women in achieving independence (Komori, 2008).

Women professional status is determined by their relationship with men as opposed to professional credentials.
