One’s work as a network engineer allows me to interact with various colleagues from different departments in the organizational setting from the basic nature of one’s responsibilities. I am assigned to my organization’s information technology department. I ensure that all office computers are interconnected from one work setting to the other. The tools and techniques used include knowledge and expertise in networking, as well as the tools needed to install, design, implement, monitor, and upgrade hardware and software systems. I also need to apply the theories learned in the actual work setting by catering to the technological needs and demands of each colleague and the whole organization. The tasks include maintenance of infrastructure and database systems, troubleshooting, anticipating IT demands, and addressing pressing problems with effective solutions, as required.

The difference between the planning, analysis, design, implementation, and maintenance of a software system versus that of a socio-technical system is the scope and depth of encompassing responsibilities. The former functions in a software system are merely confined to addressing the requirements needed to design, implement, and monitor the software system; and do not require ensuring that the software system is effectively interconnected to other users in the organization.
