Extract of sample "Communication on the Internet"

If you were the CEO of Facebook, would make information about users private by default, or shareable by default? What factors would impact your decision? I would make information about users private. There are two factors that impact my decision which is security and privacy. With regard to security, making personal information readily available such as birthdays provide online criminals an opportunity to steal or hack the users' account. Some of the information on facebook are security questions (birthday, birthplace, location, etch) and such should be kept private by default unless users chose it to be open.

I am also conscious about privacy to avoid being harassed by perverts or undesirable online. The anonymity that can be assumed by users in facebook (using different account name or giving aliases) makes people act looser that sometimes they can be rude. Also, I do not like the idea that strangers can peer into my private life by default. As a current or potential user of Facebook, are you bothered by your friend’s actions being woven into the way advertising appears on your page? Why or why not?

Sometimes it can really be annoying. I just wish that there is an option for me to review ads on my page without unsubscribing to my friend’s activities. It clutters and floods my screen that diminishes my Facebooking experience.
