The decision support system is crucial in enhancing the rate at which an organization makes decisions, as well as improving the efficiency of the decision-making process. Managing the diversity of the workforce specializing in decision support systems in micro-enterprises by the leaders of macro enterprises is not a simple task. The varying experiences, ideas, and viewpoints possessed by different members of the workforce make their management a challenging task. Thus, to manage effectively the diversity in ideas and viewpoints, the leaders of macro enterprises require ethical values that will enable them to treat the workforce equally, regardless of gender, race, religion, culture and abilities (Harvey, 2012). Through adopting a non-discrimination policy, the leaders can afford to treat all the members of the workforce with equality, thus promoting feelings of appreciation amongst the workforce.

The creation of teams and groups that embraces and comprises different elements of the workforce serves to promote the management of diversity, in that all the members of the workforce feel considered and represented in the groups and teams. Valuing and considering the contributions made by all members of the workforce serves to make the workforce more vibrant, creative and innovative, in that they feel that their ideas and inventions will be recognized and appreciated by the organization (Jeffs, 2008). Receiving and treating the grievances and the concerns raised by members of the workforce, without discrimination or favouritism on any basis that creates diversity in the workforce, is another successful step towards having the leaders of the macro enterprises manage the diversity of the workforce specializing in decision support system (Harvey, 2012). Through the effectiveness of diversity in the workforce, the leaders are assured of a motivated team, which guarantees success.

Some characteristics are relevant for small businesses to be considered as appropriate in the selection process for developing decision support systems. A small business requires being technologically oriented, an aspect that serves to ensure that the business is in a position to test and try novel technological innovations, ensuring that it can develop a system that is most appropriate for the business (Power, 2002). This is essential since technology keeps changing and the types of decisions to be made are dynamic, thus calling for constant improvement in the business DSS so established.

Another requisite characteristic of such a small business is teamwork. A decision support system can thrive well in an environment where there is teamwork, and where all the members of the organization are involved in the decision-making process (Munoz, 2010). Training and development as well as the culture of persistent growth are the other desired characteristics of a small business for consideration in the development of DSS. Since the nature and requirements of the decisions to be made in an organization keep changing, then, a small business should embrace the culture of training and developing its workforce, while at the same time persisting in growth to ensure that the workforce matches the changing decision-making needs of an organization (Steven, 2008).

In conclusion, DSS is an essential element of any business that seeks to prosper, due to the creation of an easy and quick channel of decision-making. Management of diversity in the workforce is yet another important aspect of business success, which requires the creation of equality, teamwork, and putting into consideration all the contributions given by the members of the workforce. Training and development, persistent growth as well as a culture of innovation and creativity are prerequisites for micro-enterprises, which should be considered for the development of DSS.
