ATM inquires about the type of transaction from the customer who then chooses to pick the withdrawal transaction (Mellor, 2005).

The customer is asked to enter the amount of cash to withdraw. The ATM checks whether is it possible to withdraw that exact amount of money depending on the bank’s policy and then proceeds to send a request to the bank system, processes transactions, and returns the account balance. The machine dispenses the money and asks the customer to collect it. The ATM continues asking the customer if he/she would want to perform another transaction to which the customer responds no. The ATM processes a receipt, and prints and ejects it together with the card.

The customer pulls out the card and the ATM resumes to the initial state (O’Docherty, 2005). In this particular use case scenario, making an account deposit can be demeaned as the main use case. An association between the bank customer (actor) and the use case ‘deposit funds’ is necessary since it is the actor that executes that use case or in other terms ‘uses’ it to interact with the system. Another possible association to the use case that can be viewed is the bank’s connection to the ‘deposit funds’ transaction.

The bank acknowledges the deposit of funds to the customer’s account and, therefore, has a key connection to the use case (Dennis, 2009). Execution of the use case deposit of funds is not complete without the validation of the account user. This is a mandatory step brought in by the bank system to identify the customer. This brings about the inclusion of another use case ‘Validate user’ which depends on the use case ‘deposit of funds’. Another optional use case brought in is ‘wrong pin’.

This is extended from the use case ‘Validate user’ in the case where the validation of the user fails, and an optional behavior occurs. This is used to show that the use case provides additional functionality to the system (Gomaa, 2011). The bank customer (actor) interacts with the system using the use case ‘transfer funds’, therefore, an association between the two. Since the bank also takes part in this transaction, it is also associated with this use case. The execution of the ‘transfer funds’ use needs the mandatory inclusion of the use case ‘validate user’ so that the bank secures the identification of the user carrying out the transaction.

Another behavior that may occur from the ‘transfer funds’ transaction is the possibility of insufficient funds. This would, therefore, be an extended use case from the ‘Transfer funds’ use case. This use case is, however, optional.
There may be a possibility of ‘wrong pin’, which would be a use case extended from the ‘validate user’ use case. All the extended use cases are optional but their main use expounds on the functionality of the system (Mellor, 2005).

One of the key ethical issues brought out by the use case model of the ATM system is the impact on employment. Most of the services that had once been provided by the clerks in the banking halls have now been automated by the ATM. This has brought about downsizing in many bank companies thus rendering people unemployed. This leads to moral evils such as crime rates increase since the people employed are now out of work. Poverty also becomes an outcome of unemployment since the unemployed people will no longer have a stable source of income (Dennis, 2009).

Another social issue that is brought about by the automation of bank teller services is alienation. People no longer interact in such environments. Man has now been accustomed to the presence of machines rather than human beings in their day-to-day lives. In cases where people interact during transactions such as the deposit of funds, machines have been put in place; therefore, human-to-human interaction has been eliminated.
