?The Professional Responsibility and Communication The Professional Responsibility and Communication DQ1- Professional Responsibility It has been discovered that business is not all about employing people and making money but a tool that makes the professions, careers and indeed the world a better place. This is evident in the profession of computing and information technology where people working in the industry are extremely knowledgeable and handle highly sensitive information. The computing and technological industry is one area that the world has come to rely on for nearly all aspects that relate to life; which range from finances to social media as Kinga (2009, pp. 3) puts it. Consequently, it calls for responsibility from the part of those that work in the sector not only for the benefit of the company but also to their fellow colleagues and the world in general. This paper will highlight the responsibilities that these professionals have to the society, ways to be responsible and the business ethics that are involved in the course. The biggest responsibility that they ought to have is ensuring that they assess the social impact of their creation to the society according to ACM (2011). This is because there are numerous instances where the savvy technological experts come up with very beneficial programmers. However, some products that have been created cause a lot of destruction and loss to the public. For instance, some developers create viruses and other destructive software. Others make programs that hack into databases or worse still interfere with financial records of companies. Secondly they have a responsibility to be trustworthy and fair. This can be achieved by having genuine programs and not putting their clients or companies in jeopardy. Such ways includes non-disclosure of important information regarding sensitive issues. Lastly they should not rely on monetary compensation to do their work, rather their motivation should be result driven (Grodzinsky 1999, pp. 10). It is also important to note that the computing professionals are in business to make money even though most of the people working in this field work in individual companies. This calls them to adhere to the company goals and objectives. The code of conduct of some of the most successful companies is very clear. This however should not be the benchmark of their operations. Moral virtues as well as professional conduct should be incorporated into the organizational behaviors of these individuals by the human resource departments. On the other hand, business ethics are also a big responsibility that all companies in all fields must observe. Technological and computing companies should not practice in such a manner that breaks the generally accepted business ethics. For example, they should be honest and not manipulate other companies because of superiority in the information aspects. In addition to that, it is good for such companies to practice corporate social responsibilities in the society they operate (Grodzinsky 1999, pp. 10). Such undertakings could be done by advancing bursaries, giving educational trips and sponsorships to students with passion in this industry but without the capacity to do so. DQ 2- Communications The use of internet slang, short texts and icons has raised questions about their benefits and their effect on the mainstream languages. There has been a debate on whether the new style is in itself a new communication mechanism or otherwise. It is clear that despite the merits involved in this new style such as ease of use and convenience, written language is negatively affected and boundaries should be set. In some areas, some of the old versions or formal language is being totally replaced with new words, commonly among the youths. One of the most obvious merits in the use of short or simplified language especially while using the internet is that that it provides a convenient way of communication. Brown et al (2006) point out that this creates a faster and more effective correspondence especially when using avenues such as Yahoo! Messenger or Google talk. It is also important in the sense that many people especially those in the social media like facebook can use abbreviations and indicators to communicate with people who they share language with. Abbreviations like “lol” or laugh out loud are now being used commonly in day to day conversation. Apart from this uses, it is agreeable that these words do not have a place in academia. The use of the signal and new generation slang has no doubt affected a considerable number of users especially in the official world. There have been instances where a number of graduates use unofficial and grammatically incorrect languages in job applications. This is one effect that a repeated use of such language has over the society. In their article, Brown et al (2006) say that “without formalized linguistic rules, it is difficult to communicate”. They further note that if the academic rules are not enforced in the academic world then it will be enforced nowhere. The sentiment is true because the learning institutions only concentrate on written languages rather than concentrating on the oral capability of the students that they teach. The argument is accurate in many languages all over the world. It is a common trend that the younger generation of any society may corrupt the mainstream language and code it with their best understood one. This has not only affected the English language but also others like French and Swahili that is spoken mostly in East Africa. In his article, Kinga (2009, pp. 17) shows the direct effects that technology has brought especially in the communication and linguistic sector. He categorically states that the mobile phone text messaging creates a very comfortable and easy way of communicating which risks many minds to be lazy and always using shortcuts. In conclusion, the discussion has looked at the professionalism of the computing world and the responsibilities that are expected from the involved experts. In the world today, the way people carry out their careers/ professions has changed to include ethics and professional responsibility. Additionally, there has been an insight that communication helps to alleviate the mode of living. However, if not taken with caution it may end up spoiling or negatively impacting the society.
